Meg White Gets Married

Meg White is a married woman. The White Stripes drummer tied the knot with her fiancé, guitarist Jackson Smith, in Nashville last Friday.

Song Of The Day: Tell Me It's Not Over By Starsailor

"Tell Me It's Not Over" is the first single released from the 2009 album, All the Plans by the English alternative rock band, Starsailor.
This tune refers to a relationship near the end because of the adultery of his partner. The song almost makes reference to the possibility of forgiveness after an infidelity for the sake of the couple.
Interestingly, on January 19, 2009 during an interview, lead singer James Walsh was interviewed and he admitted that he had recorded a version of the lead single, "Tell Me It's Not Over" featuring Brandon Flowers from The Killers. The song was remixed by Flowers and Stuart Price and has since been leaked onto the internet.
According to the site administrator of the Starsailor Official Message Board, Boo, Brandon Flowers did in fact record, informally with James, vocals on a version of the song. This was actually meant to be a special secret surprise they had hoped to bring the fans at some time in the future. But at this stage, the recording was just a friendly collaboration between the two of them and does not yet have any official approval from Brandon or The Killers' management.

For My Dad

My father loves TV programming almost as much as me and is always taping things. I think at one time I counted over 20 VCRs that he actively used to tape shows that he did not want to miss. He has recently converted to the love of the PVR and owns a few of these now. I saw this website and thought it might help him with his recording schedule.

If you are missing LOST you can watch this amusing (unofficial) action-figure series.

This Week I.....

Was pleasantly surprised when my workmates went out and brought this back for me while they were out and about because they know how much I love this place.
Went for a dental exam, cleaning and scaling at my regular dentist and survived.
Bought myself this sweet vehicle and have been enjoying it immensely. I love having the windows down and the sunroof open. I have been enjoying going for drives and taking advantage of my free Satellite Radio for 3 months.

Trailer: Sherlock Holmes

Detective Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr.) and his stalwart partner Watson (Law) engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.
I think this might be Guy Ritchie's comback.

Trailer: The Road

A post-apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to survive by any means possible.

Trailer: Extract

Joel, the owner of an Extract plant, tries to contend with myriad personal and professional problems, such as his potentially unfaithful wife and employees who want to take advantage of him. The cast looks great.

Song Of The Day: Cartoons and Forever Plans By Maria Taylor

I love this tune and video for "Cartoons and Forever Plans" by Maria Taylor with very special guest vocalist Michael Stipe.

Cool Movie Alert

I love Charlyne Yi. She played Seth Rogen's stoner friend Jodi in the film Knocked Up.
Today I learned that she wrote and stars in Paper Heart which will open August 7.

It is a part-documentary feature that took home a screenwriting award at Sundance. The movie chronicles her mixed feelings about love......mainly, that she has never experienced what "true love" really feels like.
The movie co-stars Yi's real-life boyfriend, Michael Cera.
The best parts of this flick may be Yi's interviews with "regular" folks across the country who share real-life love stories. In one, an older couple speaks about what it was like to get married at age 17. In another hilarious segment, children explain how they think love will feel.

Song Of The Day: Just The Way You Are By Billy Joel

Just the Way You Are" is a love song from Billy Joel's 1977 pop rock album, The Stranger. It was written as a birthday gift to Joel's first wife Elizabeth Weber.
Joel has gone on record stating that he personally dislikes the song and was originally going to leave it off the album. However, at the request of both Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow (both were recording in other studios in the same building at the time), Joel agreed to leave it on the album. Joel does not perform "Just the Way You Are" regularly. This tune has been covered by several artists, including Diana Krall, Barry White, Shirley Bassey, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Frank Sinatra.

Clips From Inglorious Bastards

Although this film will not be opening in theaters until August 21st, 2009 you can catch some clips here.

Song Of The Day: Key To The Highway By Derek And The Dominos

"Key to the Highway" has been played and/or recorded by numerous other well known artists including The Band, B.B. King, Muddy Water and The Rolling Stones. However, Eric Clapton, recorded the best-known version of the song for Derek and the Dominos' 1970 landmark album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Lasting over 9 minutes, this version was essentially an accidental, impromptu jam between Clapton and Duane Allman. They happened to have heard singer Sam Samudio doing the same song in a neighbouring studio and spontaneously started playing it. Their startled record producer, Tom Dowd, heard what was happening and quickly told the engineers to "hit the goddamn machine!" and start the tape recorder running. This explains why the track starts with a fade-in to playing clearly already underway.

10 Characters From LOST That Have Been Screwed Over

It has been one week since the Season Finale of LOST and already I am missing it. So to help mend my aching heart I will frequently reference links that relate to my favorite television show over the course of the summer.

Here is a list of characters who have been most thoroughly screwed by the nature of television.

I was most disappointed about Eko. Such a great, conflicted character, and gone too soon.

I also think Hurley gets shafted alot....I need more storyline from him.

Premiere Show Of Tonight Show With Conan O' Brien

Pearl Jam is scheduled to appear as the inaugural musical guest for the June 1, 2009 premiere of “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien.” The band will perform songs from their upcoming studio album.

Song Of The Day: 21st Century Breakdown By Green Day

Todays song of the Day was suggested by my young and hip galpal Michelle who loves this song and the political message behind it. The entire album focuses on big subjects that are relevant to young adults today.....greed, corrupted religion, and war. From what I have been hearing as I listen to all the tracks the album can be broken into three parts..... Heroes and Cons, Charlatans and Saints, and Horseshoes and Handgrenades.

Toronto Gets New Street Signs

Toronto's new blue-and-white street signs are soon going to be popping up everywhere and according to this newsworthy article in the Globe and Mail it has generated some conflicting opinions from the masses. While perusing the comments I learned just how strongly people feel about this subject. Apparently there is even a Facebook fan page in support of the "Acorn-topped" Toronto street signs.
People are venting their opinions on this very public topic with some very thoughtful suggestions and ideas.
Personally, they look fine to me. They do have a bit of a cost effective look to them but they are not hideous. I suspect that had seen the complete bill for deploying the old ones everywhere, there would have been even more complaints.

Cool T-Shirts

Check out this awesome film T-shirt company.
This will appeal to movie fans wanting something that cuts a little bit deeper than simply having a Hollywood star’s grinning mug on your chest. How Many Countries Can You Name In 5 Minutes?

Holy Moly......this is harder than you think. I only scored 38. I suck!

Song Of The Day: All I Want Is You By Glen Campbell

Country crooner Glen Campbell covers "All I want is you" by U2. His version was pretty faithful to the original.

Random Questions

Are there any conspiracy theories that you believe could be true?
Absolutely.....the list is endless but here are a few.
I don’t know if it qualifies as a conspiracy theory, but I am a believer in the existence of aliens. Or at least life beyond this planet.
The Roswell crash cover-up....... I'm not sure that the Government hid or captured aliens but I do think that if there was a crash they would cover it up to prevent mass panic and chaos. I have seen questionable things in the night sky. I think that there are many things in this great big universe that we don't know about yet.
Princess Di is said to have been killed by the Royal Family and in some stories, her death ordered by the Queen herself. I think her death was a sad end to a pitiful fairy tale gone all wrong.
John F. Kennedy......A number of conspiracy theories exist with regard to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Theories began to be generated soon after his death, and new ones continue to be proposed even today. Many of these theories propose a criminal conspiracy involving parties such as the Federal Reserve, the CIA, the KGB, the Mafia, Federal Bureau of Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Fidel Castro, George H. W. Bush, Cuban exile groups opposed to the Castro government and the military and/or government interests of the United States. Do I think I know why he was killed or by what group? Absolutely not...... but neither do I think that this elaborate plan was conceived and carried out by one man.

Have you ever had to call 9-1-1? Several times.

If someone rang your doorbell/knocked on your door at 1am, would you answer it? Not without checking out the front windows first.

What is the strangest name you've ever heard someone name their child (or a person you met... however you want to answer it)? When I worked in pediatrics during nursing school someone named their toddler.......Peter Cedar. I was tempted to report them to CAS for that.

If you promised to never lie again in your lifetime, in what area would it be hardest to uphold the promise? When someone asks me how do they look.

What color is your front door? Black with gold handle, lock, and kickplate.

If you had to participate, would you rather be in a mud wrestling competition or a Jello wrestling competition? I have to go for the mud as the Jello would get all sticky. It may look all bouncy and fun, it would just start melting from the body heat. Now mud on the other hand, would keep it’s viscosity long enough to ensure a good fight. Plus, I believe it’s good for your pores.

Oprah.....love her, hate her, or don't care? For the most part I love her. She tries to be a positive energy and is always sharing her journey of growth and struggle to help bring out the best in others.

Have you ever driven/ridden on a tractor? I've ridden them many times (my Grandpa was a farmer) but have never driven one.

Are you superstitious? Kind of. I don't go out of my way to do things but I also won't walk under a ladder.

Song Of The Day: Humble Me By Norah Jones

Sometimes we have to hit our rock bottom to be humbled.

My Thoughts On Lost (Season 5 Finale)....Better Late Than Never

8 months is too long to wait, but I am thankful that the episode was just the end of the season and not the series. It could have been.... bomb goes off..... that's it.
Juliet getting sucked into the well was just heartbreaking. Looks like she may save the day in the end.
I love this season with all the twists, the great writing, time traveling, the characters...... even the constant wonder of good vs evil........ Ben vs Charles, Jack vs Saywer. Who is right? Who is good? What is destiny? Is there ever a meant to be? Should you ever try to change the past?

Where was Desmond during this episode?
I was so glad to finally see Bernard and Rose and Vincent.
Jacob seems to be ageless like Richard.
Jacob touched everyone he visited. I wonder why he visited some of them as children, and some as adults.
I'm positive Jacob isn't dead.

Watched the finale of Survivor.

Did a major overhaul and clean up on the kids Toy Room.

Became a substitute playmate for my youngest daughter as she achingly missed the presence of her best friend who was away vacationing with her family in Cuba.

Song Of The Day: Because I Got High By Afroman (Uncensored)

Joseph “Afroman” Foreman’s cautionary comedy about the drawbacks of the weed serves as an anti-drug song. A fondness for marijuana leads to an increasingly absurd chain of events in which the protagonist flunks his college class, misses his child support payments, gambles his money away, is unable to perform sexually, loses both his legs in a car accident and is left homeless.

Song Of The Day: Money By The Flying Lizards

I really like this cover of the 1959 single. These are the new things on DVD that are of interest to me and may be to you.

1.) Taken.....A former spy relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter, who has been forced into the slave trade.

2.) Passengers.....A grief counselor working with a group of plane-crash survivors finds herself at the root of a mystery when her clients begin to disappear.

3.) Personal Effects......Walter is a young man trying to deal with the death of his sister. After getting a job as a wedding planner, he meets Linda , a beautiful older woman with emotional wounds that are similar to his own. As both Linda and Walter try to cope with the pain and frustration of their loss, the two bond—their shared tragedies spawning an unlikely and beautiful romance.

4.) Taking Chance.......Based on real-life events, Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a volunteer military escort officer, accompanies the body of 19-year-old Marine Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyoming.

5.) Underworld: Rise of the Lycans........An origins story centered on the centuries-old feud between the race of aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.

Song Of The Day: Believer By Susanna & The Magical Orchestra

Susanna and the Magical Orchestra are actually a duo that consists of singer Susanna Karolina Wallumrod and keyboard player Morten Qvenild. Susanna has a very distinct, clear and cool voice that stands much on its own, only accompanied by Morten on various keyboard instruments such as acoustic piano, synthesizers and even harpsichord and church organ. The duo is mostly known for their highly personal interpretations of well known songs such as Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I love this featured song and think it fits well with this great video that features characters from LOST.

Song Of The Day: Brand New Key By Melanie Safka

Did you know that following the January 1994 attack on Nancy Kerrigan, a parody of "Brand New Key" circulated on radio stations? The parody featured lyrics from Tonya Harding's point of view, and included the chorus,

"I've got a brand new pair of figure skates,
You've got a busted knee;
They're gonna lock up my ex-husband and throw away the key."

Nurses Week

Seeing that Barbie turned 50 earlier this year I thought it fitting to share this YouTube video about Nurse Barbie, and Doctor Ken.

Monday, May 11, 2009

Song Of The Day: Fire Escape By Diane Birch

Such an old/vintage sounding voice from a young woman.

The role of the nurse- Nursing week

Today is the kick off day for Nurses week and I thought it appropriate to showcase the role of the nurse. I can't remember where I found this.........but I saved it as I believe it shows how all encompassing the role of the nurse is. When ever I am in the role as mentor/preceptor for a nursing student I always share with them........that a nurse is a multitude of roles. After hours when other disciplines are not available the nurse becomes the physiotherapist, recreational therapist, respiratory therapist, socialworker, etc.
Did you know I had formal schooling, including college course education?
Did you know I took a National Certification Exam?
Did you know I am a licensed professional?
Did you know the all white outfit is not the standard uniform anymore?
Did you know we don’t wear the nursing caps anymore?
Did you know I am not just the physician’s hand maiden or subordinate?
Did you know I am an independent healthcare professional that is the physician’s colleague?
Did you know I have to possess a working knowledge of Pharmacology and how it impacts your care?
Did you know it’s my job and responsibility to critically evaluate every aspect of your care?
Did you know I am required to have a sound understanding of Human Anatomy and Physiology? Did you know I have to be well versed in Microbiology and how it affects the human body?
Did you know I have to be cognizant and well studied on a plethora of human disease processes?
Did you know it’s my job to assess, monitor and treat not just your illness, but you as a person?
Did you know I command and perform critical thinking skills that require me to make life-saving decisions in a blink of an eye?
Did you know I am a highly trained professional with skills that demand sharp attention, a keen sense of prediction and a caring attitude?
Did you know I am responsible for titrating and administering medication you receive that can induce and resist almost all your normal physiological actions and reactions? And that these medications are life-saving and life-sustaining?
Did you know I am also a professional stress-juggler, and all the care you are receiving I am also providing to all my other patients?
Did you know it’s my responsibility to coordinate your care between all the services contributing to your treatment process?
Did you know I am educated on the grieving process and that I am here to help you?
Did you know I am an educational resource for any and all information related to your better health?

On April 27, the legendary 64-year-old actress began a 21-day hunger strike that she hoped would raise awareness about the plight of starving refugees in Dafar.

My Thoughts On Lost

There is a war coming and I need to know who is against who? Is it Locke against Widmore or Dharma or Jacob? Whomever it is I'm on team Locke.
I believe Richard is not an Other as he was there for a long long time and he doesn't age and the Others do.

So, Kate doesn't want to reset time Jack and her are in disagreement. She doesn't want 3 years of her life erased, and I can't blame her ........all those naked moments with Sawyer. Sure, she was kidnapped, tortured, chased and shot at, but it's a small price to pay.....ha,ha,ha.

Kate is becoming the biggest 3rd wheel.

Loved when Hurley couldn't think fast enough ..... "Okay we're from the future"....

Loved when Sawyer told Juliet......we'll buy Microsoft and bet on the 1978 Cowboys....we'll be rich.

Song Of The Day: Good Mother By Jann Arden

Song of the day is dedicated to my Mom cause I love her and she's a.......good mother.

Top 31 TV Sitcom Mothers

Take a look at this list of the best TV mothers of all time.

I think the ones that made the most lasting impression on me during my television youth were......Marion Cunningham, Maggie Malone Seaver, Roseanne, and my personal favorite Elyse Keaton.

Song Of The Day: Meet Me By The Rivers Edge By The Gaslight Anthem

This group's fondness for Springsteen, a significant influence on their music, is a fact celebrated by fans and critics alike. "Meet Me by the River's Edge" contains the line "No surrender, my Bobby Jean" and a variation of Springsteen's line "No retreat" from the songs "No Surrender" and "Bobby Jean," found on Bruce Springsteen's 1984 album Born In The USA.

A Mothers Day Gift From Tori Amos

This Mother's Day, Tori Amos wanted to extend a special gift to all mothers in the best way she knows how..... with song. 'Maybe California' ..... off her upcoming album, 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin' was written, as she describes it, from one mother to another, who, as the lyrics explore, is contemplating suicide.
