My Thoughts On Lost

Work has been getting in the way of me watching Lost on the night that it airs. Thankfully my husband bought a PVR and I just got around to watching it now. Here are some random thoughts that are running through my head.

Charles Widmore, is angry guy in fatigues. Didn’t see that one coming and if Widmore is on the island as a 20 something...I wonder if Penny's Mom is there too?

If Charles Widmore is an original other.......how and when did he get there? Was he born there or brought there......hmmm.

Desmond named his son Charlie....awwwww!

Widmore said Faraday's mother was in Los Angeles. So does that pretty much confirm that Mrs. Hawking is his mother then?

Why do all "Others" know Latin?

How does Locke know when they are going to time shift?

Desmond's shades are awesome!

Song Of The Day: White Winter Hymnal By Fleet Foxes

Fleet Foxes is a band of five young fellows from Seattle who offer up some rustic folk and beautiful vocal harmonies and melodies.

New Stuff On DVD

There is alot of new stuff on DVD that is of interest to me and may interest you.

1.) Vicky Cristina Barcelona..........I had never heard of this movie until this afternoon when I was at Shoppers Drug Mart. It caught my eye so I came home to peruse the web to get more info. I learned it is a romantic drama by Woody Allen's and it stars Rebecca Hall and Scarlett Johansson as best friends Vicky and Cristina. As the movie opens, the pair of twentysomethings travel to Barcelona so that Vicky can work on her post-graduate degree. The two meet the charming artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem), who offers to take them on a vacation and make love to them. Vicky, being a happily engaged young woman, refuses, but Cristina is eager for this life experience. A love triangle begins to coalesce, and things grow more complicated when Juan Antonio's passionate, unstable ex, Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz), arrives to stay after a suicide attempt. Not too sure if the story will enthrall me but Javier Bardem intrigues me.

2.)
The Rocker..... The Office's Rainn Wilson plays a middle-aged guy who won't give up on his rock star dreams.

3.) Pride and Glory.....A saga centered on a multi-generational family of New York City Police officers. The family's moral codes are tested when Ray Tierney, investigates a case that reveals an incendiary police corruption scandal involving his own brother-in-law. For Ray, the truth is revelatory, a Pandora's Box that threatens to upend not only the Tierney legacy but the entire NYPD.

4.) The Lucky Ones........When three very different U.S. soldiers find themselves on an unplanned road trip across America, they form a deep bond that may be the closest thing any of them has to real family. A humorous and timely drama about coming home.

5.) Lakeview Terrace

Another Gem From My Dad

My Dad sent me this video clip with the following note........This YouTube video shows an interesting winter event. These days much of the country is blanketed in snow. The snow creates a problem for everyone. It has to be moved out of the way.
You have to shovel the driveway. Your town or city probably plows the streets. But have you ever thought about trains? It would make sense that train tracks need plowing as well. But how would that work?
Well, some railroad workers in Goodland, Kansas filmed it for you. It’s actually really cool to watch.

Song Of The Day: Furr By Blitzen Trapper

I like the folksy sound of this Portland group. This song has rustic charm and very cool lyrics.

Opening Baggage Without A Key

I am cleaning out my mailbox today and finding all sorts of useful tips and tricks being sent by my dad. Below is one that travellers should be in the know of.
I also know that all the generic key and locks that come with luggage sets open any and all types of the same locks.
I am sure that this video contributes to my dads way of thinking........"Why go on vaction? It is so much easier to stay home."

Song Of The Day: I Hear The Bells By Mike Doughty

Mike Doughty is an American singer and songwriter. He led the band Soul Coughing in the 1990s. He grew tired of the band and became addicted to heroin......Doughty broke up Soul Coughing in 2000, and was promptly dropped by Warner Brothers. A few years later, Doughty beat his addiction and started touring as a solo artist. This featured song has been heard on episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Veronica Mars.
I’ve never heard of the reality show The Principal’s Office, but I found humor in this clip. These boys cracked me up…I hope their parents appreciate their sense of humor and teamwork. Kudos to to that principal for holding a straight face. No way would I have been able to keep a straight face when they were doing the tie the shoe and stretching bit.

Elephant And Dog

My Dad sent me this feel good clip the other day. He says that Jay Leno had part of this clip on the Tonight Show. The last part definately says it all.

Song Of The Day: No One's Gonna Love You By Band Of Horses

Band of Horses, previously known as Horses, is an American indie rock band formed in 2004 in Seattle by Ben Bridwell, Mat Brooke, Creighton Barrett and Rob Hampton.
Allmusic has compared Bridwell's vocals to early Neil Young. This song was played in the first season of Chuck.

Kevin Spacey Rocks

I am always asking my circle of friends and family random and thought provoking questions. One that I often ponder and reflect upon is......If you could have dinner with 5 persons (famous or not, alive or dead) who would it be? I always offer that for a successful dinner party you would want to have varied personalities that would complement one another. Kevin Spacey would definately be one of my picks. I think this man is brilliant, engaging and fun.

Alphacat Makes Me Laugh Again

Alphacat should be seriously considered for SNL.

Great Moments in Presidential Speeches

Another Inauguration Photo

Check out this great high resolution pan-and-zoom photo of the Obama inauguration.

Bush/Obama Morph

Anything is possible with photoshop.
I am a peoplewatcher. I can sit myself on a park bench and amuse myself for hours. When I people watch I jump to conclusions. I like to watch men scoping out women, dads with their kids, women checking out what other women are wearing. I like to watch couples and decide if they are married or if they are dating.
I like to form my own little stories of who they are are what they are doing even tho' I'm probably wrong 95% of the time, but it's fun to make up these little scenarios in my head.

Checking out this photo by freelance photographer Somon Hogsberg was like an afternoon at the park for me.

The photo is 100 meters long.

There are 178 people in the photo and it was shot during a period of 20 days on a railroad bridge in Warschauer Straße in Berlin, Germany.

Song Of The Day: Feelin' Groovy By Simon & Garfunkel

I like this songs message which is delivered in its opening verse..... "Slow down, you move too fast".

The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

I recently commented on how much I enjoyed the movie the Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. While my husband and I were leaving the theatre he mentioned to me how the movie reminded him of Forrest Gump and he saw many similarities. This video is reflective of what he observed.

Website Of The Day: You Park Like An Asshole

I could have fun with a website like this.
Have you ever been annoyed by a car taking up two spaces on the street? How about a car too close to yours? What about the car at the mall parked diagonally? Now you can do something about it. Simply download a notice and place it on the car's windshield. The owner of the vehicle will be informed of their asshole status as well as the proper tips to improve their poor parking techniques. It's time to put an end to asshole parking, or at least to make fun of it.

My Thoughts On Lost

Okay..... let me begin by saying it was difficult for me to stay focused last evening at work while I knew the season premiere of Lost was being broadcast. My mind was often distracted with thoughts lingering to Sawyer and the gang. However my patients needed me and I stayed mindful and true to the task at hand knowing that I could watch the episode this afternoon. It was an afternoon of sweet bliss.
The fifth season of Lost started with a bang.

I have to say one of my favorite parts was Hurley's explanation to his Mom about what really happened on the island. He sounded like I do when I am trying to explain "Lost" to someone who has never watched the show.

Here are some random thoughts that are now lingering in my mind......

I wonder if the lawyers that came to see Kate were really sent by Ben as a ploy to convince Kate to go back to the island with Aaron.

As the episode began withe Dr. Candle/Chang waking up to a crying baby, I was thinking....hmmmmm, you can't have babies on the island right....so who's baby is it? Or for the matter who is it? Is the baby Miles? I really am unsure of his purpose yet except that he can talk to the dead. What is his connection with the island?

I have always loved how this show reflects themes of science and faith. Mother Mary was everywhere tonight...... falling out of the plane with a belly full of heroin, on the table when Hurley was confessing to his mother, and looking over his shoulder with her heart exposed in a painting on the wall, in the very same scene.

Is Ms. Hawking Daniel’s mother? She was the creepy woman from the bookstore that Desmond met in season 2.

So we know that Desmond is Daniels constant. I am beginning to think that the Oceanic 6 are the islands constant.

They spent alot of time emphasizing the "no change" rule for the time stream however does this apply to Desmond or is he an exception. Also it looks like some people like Charlotte may be affected by the time shifts. (bleeding nose, headache, memory lapses) The miner caught in the beginning with the melting drill had the same nosebleed due to a huge exposure to the "energy."

Is it a type of time travel sickness? Is this the same sickness that took Rosseau’s people?

I found Bernard and Rose annoying this episode.

Ben never blinks.

Ethan still creeps me out and every time he is onscreen Garth always reminds me that he is Tom Cruises cousin.

Sun was a little creepy also putting Kate through the ringer, blaming her for Jin's death, passive aggressively forgiving her, and then asking her how her man Jack was. She's out for blood.

Best line of the night....."Dude if you ate more comfort food, maybe you wouldn't kill people."

I love the scene where Sayid kills the man with a dishwasher full of knives.

Richard’s compass is the same one Locke was shown as a little boy, when they asked him if he recognized anything, right?

I thought it was freaky when the ghost of Anna Lucia tells Hurley that Libby says hi.

Song Of The Day: Cops And Robbers By The Hoosiers

The Hoosiers are an English band from the UK and Sweden. "Cops and Robbers" is their fourth single to be released from their debut album. The song has been noted for its remarkable similarities to "The Lovecats" by The Cure.......which I tend to agree.
This awesome video was shot at Dickens World, and is set in London in the 1800s.
According to The Hoosiers record label's website, this song is about how the games we played as children in the playground can lead to more severe repercussions when older.

Sarah Haskins Makes Me Laugh

Infomania is the name of an American half-hour weekly satirical news show.
It puts a comedic spin on various pieces of popular media including outlandish news stories covered by the corporate media, video games, popular viarl videos, and the world of movies and music. Sarah Haskins is one of the correspondents and she is funny.

Conjoined Twins

What an amazing pair of girls. I showed this video to my two daughters and they began theorizing and conjuring up all the alternative ways you could be joined. I don't think they quite got the benefit of the video that I wanted them to.

Song Of The Day: You Found Me By The Fray

This song has been used with clips of both the video and ABC's Lost during the promotional trailers for the show's upcoming 5th season.
This song is about the light at the end of the tunnel, and I’ve come to that point. Nobody knows what the future will bring, but I have come out of the past year surer and more confident of myself. May that be enough for me to weather everything that may come next. I have found me.

Favorite Lost Episodes

It sucks to be a nurse this week. I have to work nights tonight and will be missing the season premiere of my most beloved show. Thankfully I am off tomorrow and can catch up.
To get you in the mood. My favorite was from season 4......"the constant." I also thought the pilot episode rocked. I am so excited!!

Song Of The Day: A Dustland Fairytale by The Killers

Flowers explained to Rolling Stone that this is "specifically about my mom and dad."
This song tells the story of how Flowers' mother and father met when they were both aged 15 and living on the same trailer park.

"New Construction From 1955!"

This 50's bungalow, located on a quiet, cul-de-sac street on the Hill, has seriously never been lived in... at least on the main level.
This one owner home was resided only in the lower level during their stay here, so the main level has been frozen in time and perfectly preserved.

I find the whole concept of this story kind of eerie in a twilight sorta way.

Guilt Ridden

This dog is too cute to be mad at. He definately knows he is in trouble and looks so ashamed.

Another Reason I Love Morgan Freeman

In 1997, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman made an historic offer to the high school in his hometown of Charleston, Mississippi: He would foot the bill for the school's senior prom—on condition that both black and white students be allowed to attend. Even though the students shared classes and every other aspect of school life, Charleston High had a tradition of holding two proms—one white, one black. Freeman's offer was ignored.

In 2008, he made it again. This time, the school accepted and history was made, but not without significant opposition.

Prom Night In Mississippi tells the highly entertaining and ultimately hopeful story of the fallout from Freeman's offer, as senior students of Charleston High rally in preparation for the school's first-ever integrated prom.

Song Of The Day: Cologne by Ben Folds

This song is about two lovers trying to let go of their love as they live thousands of miles apart.
The second verse tells the true story of the astronaut Lisa Nowak, who had a crush on her fellow astronaut William Oefelein. In 2007 she drove for 14 hours from Houston to Florida, before kidnapping Colleen Shipman, the girlfriend of Oefelein, whom she saw as her love rival. It was claimed that Nowak wore a diaper during her journey as so determined was she to remove Shipman from the equation that nothing, not even potty breaks, was going to stop her.

Inauguration Day

The new American President will take office tomorrow. This great Inaugural Media Guide has all the details of what will be going on plus more: schedules, music lists, biographies, timelines, menus and recipes, history of the ceremony, architectural details of different locations associated with the inauguration, and color pictures too. I'd like to print it out but it is 121 pages.
In the meantime here is a website that has lots of fun trivia and biographical information regarding Barack Obama. Here is another that references 70 songs about American presidents.

Living Simple During The Winter

During the dark wintry months I tend to become shamefully accumulative in my shopping and am finding that I am always adding stuff to my home that is not always necessary.
The thought of minimizing just does not excite me like it has in other times.
Lately I have been pondering this and realized that this is not a new phenomenon.
What I have come to realize is that I almost always change my behavior to a degree in the white chill of winter. Whether it’s eating different foods, enjoying different activities, or having a different energy level, I change with the seasons. And that’s okay. For me, winter is a time to snuggle up and relax.

Evenings spent curled up on the couch watching movies, reading, and baking are par for the course.
My whole outlook changes with the weather as well it seems.

Rooms that feel messy and cluttered in the spring and summer seem cozy and lived in during the chilly months.
A packed pantry isn’t a sign of overindulgence; it’s a way to avoid hitting the grocery store on snowy evenings.
A full closet does not mean pruning is in order; it means more ways to layer up and stay comfy.
Days spent indoors aren’t a waste of a perfectly good day. Instead, they’re the perfect way to enjoy it.

I have come to realize that things always feel new and exciting again in spring, and in the meantime, we get to enjoy the coziness and lazy days of winter. Now, where’s that hot chocolate? I'm in the mood for a Greys Anatomy Marathon.

Song Of The Day: Cold Desert by Kings Of Leon

This was my favorite group of 2008
Lead vocalist Caleb Followill said on his band's website that this ballad is, "about a man at the end of his rope who picks himself back up."
One of this song's lyrics is, "Jesus doesn't love me, and no one ever carried my load." This has provoked much comment as three of the Kings of Leon are sons of a Pentecostal preacher, and the fourth, his nephew. Frontman and lyricist Caleb Followill admitted to the NME that "when it was played back to me and I heard the line... my eyes welled up with tears. It was the worst thing that I could imagine." So why did Caleb write the couplet? He told The Daily Telegraph September 17, 2008 that he was referring to the guilt of person with a Christian upbringing living the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. The son of a preacher explained: "There's still lingering guilt, and once I start to drink you don't want to be around me because there's a level of brutal honesty, if not just pure meanness. In a way, I lash out at everyone else because that's when I start to point fingers at myself. And that's when I write lyrics."

Band From TV

My dad sent me this link this afternoon with a note telling me I may recognize a few of the members of this group that made their debut on Jay Leno the other night. I recognized Hugh Laurie, bachelor Bob and the guy from Desperate Housewives.

This Inspires Me

It is a well known fact that I love Lego and can lose track of time playing with these little bits of plastic. I become quite competitive and will often challenge my daughters to contests such as....."Who can build the best vehicle"; "Who can build the best house"; and even "who can build the best neighborhood."
Legoland in Carlsbad, California has a new display in honor of the presidential inauguration Tuesday. The park has modified its US Capitol model to portray Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, president Bush, Dick Cheney, Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and the other dignitaries who will be present as Obama takes the oath of office, as well as the crowd! In addition to the swearing-in ceremony, see Aretha Franklin ready to entertain and the presidential motorcade waiting to join the inaugural parade. The display opens to the public today. Click

Song Of The Day: Catcher In The Rye By Guns N' Roses

This piano ballad originally featured Queen guitarist Brian May, who teamed up with the band in 1999 for a collaboration. However nine years later, just prior to the release of Chinese Democracy, he was disappointed to learn that his contribution have been removed from the final version of the song. May commented: "It is a shame. I was proud of it."
The title refers to J.D. Salinger's novel of adolescence Catcher in the Rye. Rose appears to be questioning in this song why angst-ridden youths, such as Mark Chapman, the murderer of John Lennon, appear to be motivated by the book's anti-hero Holden Caulfield.
I have always pondered that too.

Song Of The Day: A Beautiful Mess By Jason Mraz

Jason Mraz performed this song at the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. He has also said that this song is about "giving yourself or your time to someone or something else." His songs are like poetry to me.

Manners

Recently I have been noticing firsthand the decline of manners and have been pondering what is contributing to this state of humanity.
I believe it is daily stress,
a lack of education about good manners and technology that are all playing their part in the decline of manners.

1. Are good manners important? Yes.

2. Do “manners make the man”? They make the man, the woman and the child. How you behave and how you treat others speaks volumes about oneself.

3. What constitutes good manners in your house? The basics.......please and thank you, respect for others and kindness to animals.

Song Of The Day: You Don't Know How It Feels By Tom Petty

I have always enjoyed this well-written piece about dealing with problems and losses in life. The original lyrics say, "So let me get to the point. Let's ROLL another joint." MTV, wanting to avoid controversy, asked Petty to change the lyrics for the video. He changed them, oddly enough to "Let's HIT another joint."

What A Wonderful World Indeed!

As I watched this I was waiting for the Japanese version of Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul.

I Agree Morgan

Black History Month has roots in historian Carter G. Woodson’s Negro History Week, which he designated in 1926 as the second week in February to mark the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Woodson said he hoped the week could one day be eliminated.......when black history would become fundamental to American history.
Morgan also said there is no “white history month” and says the only way to get rid of racism is to “stop talking about it. He also believes the labels “black” and “white” are an obstacle to beating racism.

Morgan Freeman says the concept of a month dedicated to black history is “ridiculous.” Here’s what he had to say about it in a “60 Minutes” interview
airing tonight.

New love or old? New appreciation for my old love

Song Of The Day: Train, train By Blackfoot

Blackfoot was a Southern rock band from Jacksonville, Florida. They were formed in 1972 that disbanded in 1984. They were contemporaries of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and tried for years to make it as a Southern rock band, although they were more popular as a hard rock outfit. I love the harmonica intro at the beginning that represents a train chugging along the tracks.

Lady GaGa On Jay Leno

Insane!

Do they really believe the safety helmets are going to prevent injury during this wild ride?

Song Of The Day: Waiting By City And Colour

My uber cool nephew sent me a message suggesting I listen to this tune by City and Colour. City and Colour is an acoustic solo side-project fronted by Canadian singer-songwriter Dallas Green accompanied by a varying number of musicians. Taylor, you have great taste and I too, am a fan of this St. Catherines group.

"The girl" is my favorite tune off the same album "Bring me your love."

Bummer

Here is something else to add the list of things I now fear..
