Song Of The Day: Never Been To Spain By Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night was one of the most popular bands of the 70s. Vocalist Danny Hutton’s then-girlfriend June Fairchild thought of the name when she read a magazine article about indigenous Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs, and if a night was especially cold, it was a "Three Dog Night".

Music News

A couple things related to upcoming music news that are of interest to me and may be to you:

1.) Christmas In The Heart.....Bob Dylan will sing the old yuletide standards Winter Wonderland, Little Drummer Boy, Must Be Santa, Here Comes Santa Claus, I’ll Be Home For Christmas and O Little Town of Bethlehem on his first ever Christmas album, with royalties going to the charity group, Feeding America. Dylan’s " Christmas in the Heart" album is due out on October 13. Feeding America said it expects to provide meals to 1.4 million people this holiday season with the album proceeds.

2.) Foo Fighters Greatest Hits......Foo Fighters will commemorate the group’s 15th anniversary with the Nov. 3rd release of Foo Fighters Greatest Hits on Roswell/RCA. The group recorded two new songs for the set,,,,,, “Word Forward” and “Wheels." They’ll join Grammy Award-winning songs such as “The Pretender,” “All My Life” and “Learn To Fly,” along with “Best Of You,” “Times Like These,” “My Hero, “Everlong” and others.

3.) Kings Of Leon Ready Remix Album, Live DVD........The group is planning a couple of new projects for the fall. The quartet plans to release a live DVD and a remix album in the coming months. The former was filmed at London’s O2 Arena in July, an appropriate locale since, as drummer Nathan Followill tells Billboard.com, “England is really the first place we broke…We figured what better place to make a live DVD than where the fans have been the craziest for the longest?” The show featured some choice rarities, and Followill says “we just put the cameras in the back of our minds and acted like they weren’t even there.”
Even more exciting, however, is a remix album that came to life after Kings of Leon learned that other artists such as Justin Timberlake and Pharrell had started working on revisions of the band’s songs. Mark Ronson, Kenna, Lykke Li and Linkin Park are also contributing remixes, according to Followill.

This Week I......

Song Of The Day: Louie Louie By The Kingsmen

This Kingsmen version has remained the most popular version of the song.
In February, 1964, an outraged parent wrote to Robert Kennedy, then the attorney general of the United States alleging that the lyrics of "Louie Louie" were obscene. The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the complaint. In June, 1965, the FBI laboratory obtained a copy of the recording and, after two years of investigation, concluded that the recording could not be interpreted, that it was "unintelligible at any speed," and therefore the Bureau could not find that the recording was obscene. In September, 1965, an FBI agent interviewed one member of the Kingsmen. He denied that there was any obscenity in the song.

Song Of The Day: Closer To Fine By Indigo Girls

Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls write separately, and this song was written by Saliers, who says it is based on real experiences: "All of my songs, they're a combination of real experiences and what I observe through other peoples' behavior and experience. I was with my family in Vermont, and we were sitting in this rustic cabin, and I was sitting on a front porch and looking out into the trees, which, you know, whenever you're in such a bucolic setting, it can make you feel very philosophical. So that's how I was feeling. And that song is about not beating yourself up too hard to get your answer from one place. There's no panacea, that in order to be balanced or feel closer to fine it's okay to draw from this or to draw from that, to draw from a bunch of different sources. So it's about being confused but looking for the answers, and in the end knowing that you're going to be fine. No seeking just one definitive answer."

1957 vs 2009

My Cousin sent me this awhile ago and it made an impact.
I have two daughters in elementry school and there have been shifts and changes in rules and regulations. The safety parameters this school takes annoys the F*** out of me.
I have attempted to engage the powers that be in a conversation about promoting the use of common sense instead of overkill.
This has to be done gently as I do not want my children to reap the backlash of my campaign.

We really do create some of our own problems.

Keep things simple.

Scenario 1:

Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.

1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.

2009 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counsellors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario 2:

Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins.. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.

2009 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged them with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:

Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.

1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2009 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability. Jeffrey later successfully sues the school board, principal, and teacher. The suit is settled out of court for an undisclosed sum that is well in excess of 6 figures.

Scenario 4:

Billy breaks a window in his neighbour’s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt..

1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.

2009 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:

Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.

2009 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:

Pedro fails high school English.

1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.

2009 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given
his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.

1957 - Ants die.

2009 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated.
Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:

Wally falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Nancy. Nancy hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Wally feels better and goes on playing.

2009 - Nancy is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison... Wally undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Song Of The Day: Cocaine Blues By Johnny Cash

This song is the tale of a man, Willy Lee, who shoots his woman to death while under the influence of whiskey and cocaine. Willy is caught and sentenced to "ninety-nine years in the San Quentin Pen".
Johnny Cash famously performed the song at his Folsom Prison concert, saying "Folsom" instead of "San Quentin."

Song Of The Day: Life in A Northern Town By The Dream Acadamy

This was the first video ever made by The Dream Academy which are Nick Laird-Clowes, Gilbert Gabriel, and Kate St. John. This video was later updated when the song became an international top 5 hit in 1985 and this version is was rarely seen today. The lyrics make reference to Tanworth-in-Arden (England) native Nick Drake, who died of an antidepressant overdose in 1974. The Dream Academy intended the song as a tribute to Drake.

Ray & Fay

To Ray & Fay......my parents.
Their love has made me who I am today.
They are generous in ways that are entirely uncommon, and some of the most fun, easygoing, interesting people to be around that I know.
I know they may not love all of my actions and decisions, but I never wonder if they love me.

My parents were married 50 years ago today. It’s crazy to imagine spending that much time with anyone… that means they have been hanging out together longer than I’ve been doing anything.

They really do love each other, which is a rare thing these days.
They are best friends, which is a rare thing these days.

I won’t pretend that they haven’t had to face a ton of challenges together, or that they never argue........because they do. It's inevitable, I think. I am always a little suspicious of couples who claim they never argue or disagree on anything. There are always details to be ironed out, problems to solve, people to take care of… life to be lived. You have to keep going even when they feel more like poking one another in the eye than snuggling.
I love how you live, from the afternoon drives you take together, raising your animal friends, to the television shows you watch together, while sharing special treats from the fridge.
I love how you care for your children, to the way you give us anything we need if it’s in your power to give it.

Today I want to say thank you for putting one another first, and making your relationship a priority.

Thank you for giving me a great foundation to build my life on.

I love you both.

United Still Breaks Guitars

Dave Carroll promised that there were more songs to come, and true to his word here is song # 2.
This song, like the first, is pretty catchy.

It was a much bigger production than the original United Breaks Guitars. In addition to the main roles, there were nearly 100 extras in the cast and in order to say everything they wanted to say with the video, they required a broken guitar, an imitation broken guitar, a 40 foot high scissor lift, a limousine (complete with secret service agents), one genuine imitation space capsule, a space suit, a tuba, 3 suits of German Lederhosen, a canoe, one white panel van and a woman willing to wear tights and a big dollar sign.

Song Of The Day: Free By The Martinis

The Martinis are a rock band from California. The band consists of Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and his wife Linda Mallari.

New On DVD

Here are some new releases on DVD that are of interest to me and may be to you.

1.) Tyson.....A mixture of original interviews and archival footage and photographs sheds light on the life experiences of Mike Tyson. |

2.) Julia...Tilda Swinton plays an alcoholic in this intense drama.

3.) Sons of Anarchy: Season One......an adrenalized drama with darkly comedic undertones that explores a notorious outlaw motorcycle club’s (MC) desire to protect its livelihood while ensuring that their simple, sheltered town of Charming, California remains exactly that. Charming.

4.) The Last House On The Left.......After kidnapping and brutally assaulting two young women, a gang led by a prison escapee unknowingly finds refuge at a vacation home belonging the parents of one of the victims -- a mother and father who devise an increasingly gruesome series of revenge tactics.

5.) Surveillance........An FBI agent tracks a serial killer with the help of three of his would-be victims - all of whom have wildly different stories to tell.

Documentary Alert: Zombie Girl

The documentary follows Emily Hagins, a filmmaker who decides to make a feature-length zombie flick in her hometown of Austin. What makes her so unique? She's only 12 years old.

You'll be charmed by Emily's passion for film and dedication to her craft. She's a regular at the local cinema and snagged a sweet internship on an indie horror production at age 10 (yes, 10!).

"My classmates just think I'm kind of out there," Emily says. "I'm terrible at sports ... I don't really do anything else. I'm either seeing a movie or I'm making a movie or something." After a pause, she gives the thumbs-up sign. Yes, Emily is pretty much the coolest.

Basic Truths According To Jewelgurl

Hearing my kids belly laugh can make my day.

A balanced meal is one that ends in chocolate and bacon makes everything better.

That most of the things I wanted when I was 20 wouldn’t do a thing for me at 43.

That you don’t need to like everything about someone to love them.

Going to church doesn't make you a Christian anymore than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Giving isn’t a nicety, it’s a necessity.

Everyone is weird in their own way.

Learning does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

Browsing bookstores is close to sex on my Bliss List.

Some people will never open their eyes to the world.

Never stop telling your kids you love them. That way, they never forget.

Warm, quiet baths cure many ills.

Food is one of life's greatest pleasures.

There is value in simplicity.

Freshly sharpened pencils are like brand new days.

Words are incredibly powerful..........They begin genocides and prevent attrocities. They create wounds, they heal rifts.

8 Things in John Hughes Movies You Won’t See in Today’s Teen Movies

There will likely never be another John Hughes, at least not in the way he defined a type of movie. And at the same time, as much as nearly every teen movie since his seminal six recognize his influence, few of today’s teen movies can even get away with or accomplish things his films did. There are things present in Hughes’ early works that are absent from modern teen movies that establish that his films were, for better or worse, of a certain time, despite the fact that they’re so timeless.

Trailer: Zombieland

Some people like vampires.....but my family has always been fascinated with Zombie movies. I can't wait to see this flick starring Woody Harrelson,Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone. The horror comedy, takes place in a world overrun by flesh eaters. The humans take refuge in an amusement park, and the result looks like a mix of The Walking DeadShaun of the Dead and The Dukes of Hazzard.

Song Of The Day: Beds Are Burning By Midnight Oil

"Beds Are Burning" is a political song. Midnight Oil performed the song in front of a world audience of billions (including then Prime Minister John Howard) at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The whole band were dressed in black, with the words "sorry" printed conspicuously on their clothes. This was a reference to the Prime Minister's refusal to apologize, on behalf of the government of Australia, to the Aboriginal Australians for the way they have been treated over the previous 200 years, particularly in relation to native title and the government-sanctioned removal of Aboriginal children of the Stolen Generations from their families.
