Song Of The Day: Audience Of One By Rise Against

My friend Michelle is the biggest fan of this Chicago band and is always asking me to give them a listen and feature them as a song of the day. I have been listening to a few of their tunes and I am digging them and their gritty sound. I think this featured tune is one of my favorites. I also learned that most of the group are straight edge (abstaining from consuming alcoholic beverages or using recreational drugs) PETA supporters and strict vegetarians. Here is a fun fact that Michelle (who is also a ER nurse) might not know about the lead singer............He was born with heterochromia which is why his eyes are two different colors.

2016 Olympic Logos

The International Olympic Committee will decide by October which city will host the 2016 Summer Games. The finalists are Chicago, Madrid, Rio, and Tokyo. The design blog has the proposed logos for each finalist and some runners-up. Which design do you think is the best?
My pick is Chicago.

Julie & Julia

Julie & Julia is a movie about Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and Julie Powell (Amy Adams.)
This movie is based on the two true stories of Julie & Julia and it intertwines the lives of each women who, though separated by time and space, are both at loose ends…until they discover that with the right combination of passion, fearlessness and butter, anything is possible.

It’s quite interesting to read the
real Julie’s blog.
I was reading that Julia Child actually did not approve of the “cook one recipe every day” project.

Jones says Child did not approve of Powell’s cook-every-recipe-in-one-year project. The editor and author read Powell’s blog together (Julie and Julia was published a year after Child’s 2004 death). “Julia said, ‘I don’t think she’s a serious cook.’ ” Jones thinks there was a generational difference between Powell and Child. “Flinging around four-letter words when cooking isn’t attractive, to me or Julia. She didn’t want to endorse it. What came through on the blog was somebody who was doing it almost for the sake of a stunt. She would never really describe the end results, how delicious it was, and what she learned. Julia didn’t like what she called ‘the flimsies.’ She didn’t suffer fools, if you know what I mean.”

Song Of The Day: Heavy Cross By Gossip

Gossip are a three-piece American indie rock band fronted by Beth Ditto, guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie. Since the formation of the band, Ditto has been considered controversial by the mainstream for being open about her weight and homosexuality, and not holding back when it comes to discussing fellow musicians.
Their style has been described as "a soul or gospel" voice with "a sort of funky punk soundtrack".In fact, their music is the result of many influences: the band stated a liking for post-punk bands Birthday Party and Siouxsie And The Bansheesbut also for other genres like dance and hip-hop.

Great Words Of Wisdom From Walter

“There will be nights,” Brokaw quotes Cronkite as saying, “when you think you’ve done a brilliant job on a big story. You’ll leave the studio with the echoes of praise from your colleagues ringing in your ears. And once outside in New York, you’ll realize there are millions of people in this city alone who didn’t watch and who don’t give a damn what you just did.”

Own Tru Blood

This would be a great prop to add to our "Movie Room."
The Tru Blood drink has now been ‘de-fictionalized’ and emerges into reality as a delicious blood orange carbonated drink. Meticulously crafted, the Tru Blood Drink is an exact replica of the bottle design as seen on HBO’s hit television program True Blood. The 14oz glass Tru Blood bottle is stained in a rich red, with raised Tru Blood English lettering and matching Japanese Kanji.

This blood orange flavored soda is slightly tart, lightly sweet and subtly carbonated. Designed to taste great while matching the appearance of Bill’s favorite drink, the drink pours like a regular soda, but with the standing appearance in a glass is stormy and mysterious. You can pre-order a 4 pack here for $16 and your bloody beverages will ship on September 8th.

100 Things Your Kids May Never Know About

When I read this I feel sad particularly for these ones......Looking out the window during a long drive, Neat handwriting, Taking turns picking a radio station, or selecting a tape, for everyone to listen to during a long drive, The fact that words generally don’t have num8er5 in them, Carrying on a correspondence with real letters, especially the handwritten kind, Newspapers and magazines made from dead trees, Shortwave radio, Vinyl records (although I believe this is a medium that will never die)

Joyful Moments With Alley

We spent the afternoon reading books.

She sat beside me with her legs crossed, close
to my side. We read about magical places, Heidi, and
Winn Dixie. She makes connections from
the stories to her own young life.
I feel so much love from all this goodness.

We read 3 books. I would gladly read thirty
books just to watch her soak up the pages, just
to feel her little body nestled into mine.

It feels joyful and good.

I breathe her in. The her she is right now at
this moment will disappear tomorrow forever. I
am always losing him her to herself, to the
future. So I drink her in.

What Would You Do?

1.) You are in a convenience store. In the line in front of you is a drunk guy trying to purchase more alcohol. The cashier tells him they cannot sell it to him because he is obviously already intoxicated. He gets belligerent. The cashier is scared. What do you do?

Just watch for a while to see how it unfolds. I might go look for a manager. If it gets out of hand I would call 911.

2.) You are walking down the street and there is a toddler sitting on a bench by themselves in front of a store........do you just keep walking?

I might stop a few feet away and ask him where his parents are. I would wait with him and if no one comes within an extended period of time I would call the police.

3.) You are nearly in a car accident. Do you freak out, follow the person who nearly caused it & talk to them or just keep going?

I probably raise my hands in a WTH gesture and then keep driving. People can be unpredictable.

4.) You are locked in a room sitting at a desk with just a piece of paper and a purple crayon. What do you draw?

I most likely doodle my name, my kids' names, my husbands' name, and then I doodle flowers.

Song Of The Day: Where Did You Sleep Last Night By Nirvana

Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", is a traditional American folk song which dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. The identity of the song's author is unknown, but it has been recorded by dozens of artists in numerous genres. A 1993 acoustic version by Nirvana introduced the song to many people at the end of the twentieth century. This song also known as "In the Pines", and "Black Girl" has been covered by various artists such as Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead and Dolly Parton.
