Happy Fathers Day, Dad

I think my dad and I are a well-matched father and daughter duo.

Things both of us are:
Night owls

Difficult to manage when we feel like being difficult to manage
We both love to play on the computer
Incredibly good looking.......ha,ha,ha.

We have our differences, though, too.

Things we differ on:
He enjoys curry and I do not.

He enjoys tonight show with Jay Leno and I'm not that big of a fan.
Ability to curse in different languages....I am the master while my dad does not have this knowledge.
Shopping techniques. My dad buys in bulk and I struggle with the need to buy even one.
I follow recipes exactly and he makes alterations.

I think it all balances out nicely. I love you Dad........Happy Fathers Day xo

The Best and Worst Movie Fathers Ever

Do you think your dad has some shortcomings? Read this list to see who was deemed worst movie fathers ever.

My picks would include........Rodney Dangerfield in Natural Born Killers, The serial killers father in the movie The Cell

Of course there is the alternative list of Best Movie Dads. Who knew that being a great dad sometimes requires fending off hostile aliens, taking a hospital staff hostage, or dressing up like an old woman.

Scrabble Facts

Scrabble came about in 1939 when architect Alfred Mosher Butts modified a game he had been working on earlier – Lexiko. At first he called it Criss-Crosswords and based the values of the letters on based on letter usages from the New York Times (and other reputable sources). In 1948, he allowed James Brunot to manufacture the game as long as he got a cut of each board sold… which wasn’t much, at first. They actually lost money the first year they produced it. Legend goes, though, that the President of Macy’s played the game while on vacation and, upon his return to work, was shocked that his store didn’t carry it. When they did start to carry it, sales skyrocketed.

There are 96 two-letter words that are “legal” in Scrabble… including 10 that are spelled with vowels only AA, AE, AI, AY, OE, OI, OY, YA, YE, YO.

A Scrabble board is 15 spaces high and 15 spaces wide, for a total of 225 squares.

The highest known score for a single word in competition Scrabble is 392. In 1982, Dr. Saladin Khoshnaw achieved this score for the word “caziques,” which means “Indian chief.”
The highest possible score a player can get in Scrabble on a first turn is for the word MUZJIKS (128 points).
The game is sold in 121 countries in 29 different languages.

One hundred million sets have been sold worldwide.

Celebrities known for being Scrabble fans include Sting, Keanu Reeves, Moby, John Travolta and Carol Burnett.

Scrabble sets are found in one out of every three American homes.

Scrabble is a real word. It means “to scratch frantically.”

Scrabble was a daytime game show (on NBC), hosted by Chuck Woolery, from July 1984 to March 1990. A second run of the show aired from January to June, 1993.

The game has 100 tiles.

In America and Canada, when a player who empties their rack on one play, it’s called a “bingo.” Elsewhere, it’s called a “bonus.” The player gets 50 additional points.

What kind of wood is used to make Scrabble letters? Vermont Maple.

ETAERIO is the seven-letter word most likely to appear on a Scrabble rack.

The original Scrabble didn’t include a board. It was played with just the tiles.

Jewelgurl Is Back Up & Running.........Yeah!!!!

Wowza!!! It has been a week. I am now looking forward to the weekend to do whatever I want to do. I have been too busy taking care of business and am in the need for some leisure. Tuesday was appointment day and Anniversary day. The appointment went well with no new concerns identified and I left with my doctors approval to return to work. We made some revisions to the return to work plan and I will meet with my employer next week to discuss same as well as a start date. My mixed emotions regarding this continue but I will take it one day at a time.

We went out for dinner to celebrate our Anniversary but, unfortunately I was having a "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good,Very Bad Day."

Fortunately for me, these days are few and far between but when I have them, I know that I have to duck and take cover as I am doomed from beginning to end.

Wednesday and Thursday were spent trying to get the new computer set up and save some stuff from the old computers hard drive. That ended up being the easy part.

The difficulty was trying to get my wireless router working as it kept disabling my internet connection on both computers. I used up several hours speaking with people in the Philappines trying to troubleshoot to no avail. I have no idea what Garth did this morning after plugging and unpugging connections but things are up and running.........my hero!!!

Garth went for an MRI last night and was finally able to complete it with the help of DRUGS!!!! He only had to push the panic button once......hee, hee.

So here we are and we are going to spend time blogging, chillaxin, and celebrating Fathers Day taking in a Bluejays game.

Things are better now that my house is in order.

I Am Away From The Computer Today

Today I am in Toronto celebrating my 13th Wedding Anniversary with Garth and the girls. While we are enjoying a celebration dinner and doing some shopping I thought you might be interested in reading Vanity Fairs Cover Story of Angelina Jolie.

You might be interested in registering here(top right corner) to receive a free pedometer. Mine arrived last week and I love it.

You might want to listen to my latest mix tape.

I have a late afternoon appointment at Princess Margret Hospital with my oncologist and ENT. Today is the day that I will be discussing my back to work plan. I have such a mixed bag of emotion regarding this.
I am excited to be back working in a job that I enjoy immensely.
I am feeling anxious regarding the new policies, procedures and changes to my work environment.
I am feeling confident that I will be able to embrace the changes and view them as productive.
I am eager to reconnect with my colleagues and patients that I have missed dearly.
I am fearful of giving up some control of my vigilant health regime that I have established.
I am afraid I will have a setback.
I look forward to gaining some autonomy from Garth who has been at my side (mentally, emotionally and physically) since this chapter of my life began.
I am afraid of being away from Garth as he has become my ears due to my deafness in my left ear, my barometer that reminds me when I am doing too much or not enough.
I'll let you know how the discussion goes...............

GreenPrint is a free-to-use program that allows you to print exactly what you want, without any excess waste or filler. Trailer: Valkyrie

It's All In The Neck

Surfwise

I so want to see this documentry film. It is the story of Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz who set out to realize a utopian dream. He abandoned a successful medical practice and sought self-fulfillment by taking up the nomadic life of a surfer. He also took his wife and nine children along for the ride, all eleven of them living in a 24 foot camper. Together, they lived a life that would be unfathomable to most, but enviable to anyone who ever relinquished their dreams to a straight job.

Pedometer

Many sources recommend that we walk 10,000 steps a day for long term health and reduced chronic disease risk.

12,000 - 15,000 steps for successful, sustained weight loss and to build aerobic fitness make 3,000 or more of your daily steps fast.

So, last week I received a pedometer from Crystal Light. It's a great little tool that senses your body motion and counts your footsteps.

Wearing the pedometer and noting my daily steps and distance has been a great motivating tool. Since Friday morning I have clocked in at:

19,981 Steps

6.29 Miles

10.150 Kilometres

390 Calories burned

Not too bad but I may have to take it up a notch. I also did not go to the gym this weekend, which may have helped bring my numbers up higher if I had. I will begin again tomorrow morning and post my results in a few days.

Please Don't Apologize Clint........Don't Do It

I have just read about the war of words going on between Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood. I hate how Lee tries to present like he is the calm, well adjusted one while he paints Eastwood as an angry old man. We all know people like Lee, their the ones that drop inflammatory statements and then when people respond with their defense or counter argument to the issue raised the person then criticizes the persons character. Mr. Lee should shut his face!!!

Dry Drowning

When I read stuff like this it makes me terrified and fuels my anxiety. I can guarantee you the next time I am hanging with the kids at the pool I will be on hyper alert doing assessments on them every few minutes.

Tribal Style Bungee Jumping: This tribe in Vanuatu certainly have developed their own unique and incredibly dangerous way of asking for a blessing for the crop of yams. Attached by vines, the jumper dive from a 100ft tall tower and is actually supposed to graze the ground with his head. In the tribal cultue, the jumper is allowed to say anything he wants to whomever he wants before he jumps and his words won't be held against him. This is one insane activity best left to the locals!

Trailer: Wanted

Angelina Jolie may be pregnant and maternal with her family at the moment, but never forget she can kick ass. This movie has a bit of a Matrix feel to me.

The Mole Is Back.......Hooray!!! (Spoilers)

I haven't watched any full episodes since the last Anderson Cooper episode in season two. I like the mix of characters.....bold, quiet, athletic, out of shape, beautiful, whining, etc.
The host Jon Kelley has not hooked me yet. I find he lacks personality and I miss Anderson.

I was a little surprised by the first challenge. It looked dangerous. I think this is comparable to something David Blaine might do.......go over a waterfall at night. I am surprised that no one got injured. I was also mystified by Marcies picks ( shorter and older) for who would go for the real money as opposed to the fake. I did like seeing Liz, the oldest at 60, grabb a bag.

My least favorite contestant is Dr. Whiner.

I found it amusing that the first person sent home was Marcie, the person everyone thought was the Mole at the start. Obviously, these players aren't good on first impressions.

Marks sob story about his wife having to work two jobs was a little over the top.......hmmmm. So far he is my pick for the mole. I am sure it will change tho'

Fire At Universal Studios

A giant fire broke out at Universal Studios in Los Angeles early this morning, destroying the courthouse square from the Back to the Future movies and damaging the famous clock tower.

No word on how the fire started but officials say that it has now been contained. One firefighter and two other have been hurt.

I remember visiting Universal Studios in Calinfornia when I was 12. I actually have a picture of my brother Mark and I standing in Ben Hurs Chariot.

Book Review : A Thousand Spendid Suns

Another page turner that I could not put down.
The author paints a picture of a part of the world where women are agonizingly dependent on their fathers, husbands and sons. The bearing of male children being their only path to social status.
The two main characters who are woman are both very real, interesting characters. I felt for them and their painful struggles over the course of the book.
I enjoyed reading about the historical background of this story which covers 3 decades.
We we get a picture of life in the midst of a civil war and under an oppressive regime.
I find it interesting that this book was written by a man as he fully captures the heart and soul of women in his writing.

Weekend Recap

My weekend has had its ups and downs.

Friday afternoon, I had a lunch date with a friend and enjoyed some good food and great conversation. I spent the evening hanging with my munchkins working on school projects which included helping Alley create a commercial that would encourage viewers to travel to Swaziland.

Saturday, I spent the morning trying to fix our household computer. The hard drive is completely shot........ugh!!! The afternoon was spent outside sitting on the porch chatting with neighbors while the girlies played in the neighborhood.

I was also able to finish my next book for this months upcoming bookclub and do some lawn work. During the evening, my friend Mike dropped by to take a look at my computer and he confirmed the bad news. My computer is cooked. She has given me alot of milage over the last 9 years. While I was greiving my loss, Mike explained that 9 years is ancient in the computer world.

I learn alot from this guy. He enlightened me to alot of new slang and jargon from the urban dictionary as well during his visit. No wonder you have the biggest brain of all my facebook friends.......ha,ha,ha.

Sunday, I hit the gym and then to Blockbuster to pick up some flicks now that good TV is on hiatus. I watched
"Sidewalks of New York." Filmed in a documentary style with a good cast revealing the complex lives of six New Yorker's whose lives intersect at some point during the movie. It was a flick that kept my attention and was an interesting afternoons entertainment.

Trailer: Burn After Reading

The quality of the trailer is not the best but it is good enough to see that this upcoming flick by the Coen brothers looks like alot of fun. Great cast in this caper comedy.

Universl Studios Is On Fire

The fire started roughly an hour ago, and is continuing to spread, according to ABC. There are no reports of injuries at the moment.
