Song Of The Day: Fever By Peggy Lee

Written in 1956, this song was a rhythm and blues hit for Little Willie John that crossed over and became a pop standard after being transformed, with additional lyrics, by Peggy Lee and became her signature song.

Things I Like To Do On A Rainy Day

Stay in my pajamas and read the paper.

Watch all the morning talk shows. Cook a great comfort meal for dinner.

Bake a little something for dessert as well.

Watch old movies...... that may induce sleep. A nap while the rain patters on the roof is the best kind of sleep.

Sit outside on my covered porch or under my gazebo and enjoy the smell of the rain.

Take an afternoon bath and put on fresh pajamas.

Song Of The Day: The Fear By Lily Allen

I like this song as it reveals Lily's fear of the world becoming a superficial, sterile place where everything is sponsored, while also offering commentary on life as a celebrity and society today.

Disney Princesses......The Modern Version

I like these images by Vancouver B.C. photographer Dina Goldstein. She places fairy tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The “happily ever after” is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.

This Week I......

Worked four 12 hour dayshifts with 3 of them in intensive care.......ugh!!!

Went for a Stella with my workmates while sitting on the patio at Bobby C's

Went to my dentist for more work.

Watched my youngest daughter and 6 of her school chums get picked up from school in a white stretch limo and be whisked away to a party to celebrate the end of school.

Chauffeur my eldest daughter to a multitude of end of school parties.

Attend a photo shoot with my parents and siblings and their families.

Made this recipe and got rave reviews.

Watched Rightous Kill and was very disappointed.

Bought the sweetest tasting Strawberry Pie from here.

Visited and caught up with neighbours.

Had my parents stay with us overnight and pick up their animals. Believe it or not Dad......I actually missed Jo-Jo this morning. The kitchen was awfully quiet.

Song Of The Day: Many Rivers To Cross By Jimmy Cliff

I love this song of heartache....."its only my will that keeps me alive."
Many artists such as Cher, UB40, Linda Ronstadt, Desmond Dekker, Joe Cocker, Elvis Costello, U2, Bill Withers, Lenny Kravitz, The Black Crowes, The Walkmen and Annie Lennox have released cover versions of the song.

Song Of The Day: Where Is My Mind By The Pixies

"Where Is My Mind?" was prominently featured during the final scene and ending credits of the 1999 film Fight Club and has been covered by artists such as James Blunt, Toadies, M.I.A., Chantal Kreviazuk, Nada Surf, Gavin Rossdale, Raine Maida, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Song Of The Day: Gimme Sympathy By Metric

I really like this upbeat song about taking risks. "After all this is done who would you rather be the Beatles or The Rolling Stones?

It Might Get Loud

It Might Get Loud is a new documentary that puts U2's The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White in a room together.
The film follows these "three virtuosos from three different generations" and shows them where they feel most comfortable: White writing a song in Tennessee, The Edge strumming in a Dublin studio, Page in the house where Stairway to Heaven was composed.
It all leads up to a glorious meeting, where the musicians chat, play together and "teach each other songs."
It Might Get Loud opens Aug. 14, but you can watch the trailer now. The website includes a Q&A with the filmmakers and a handful of photos.

Tim Horton’s Free Summer Swims

Tim Horton’s is once again offering Free Summer Swims. This time there are free swim lessons at almost all Ontario cities. Capacity restrictions apply so make sure you go early.

Song Of The Day: Black Or White By Michael Jackson

I love this song that promotes racial unity. The song's introduction and main riff, are performed by guitarist Slash and Bill Bottrell. Along with Jackson, it featured Macaulay Culkin, and George Wendt. A young Tyra Banks, just beginning her career as a supermodel, is seen dancing to the song in the ending of the video, as well as actress Peggy Lipton.

Twisted

Lets hope this dude is a pretty boy who drops the soap a few times while he is in prison.

Did You Know?

Did you know Michael Emerson, who plays “Lost’s” delicious villain Benjamin Linus, is married to Carrie Preston, who plays “True Blood’s” red-headed barmaid Arlene. Except Carrie Preston isn’t a redhead at all ...... she’s a blonde. And, as you can see from the photo above, she looks completely different than she does on the show. Turns out Carrie was featured in an episode of “Lost” where she played Ben’s mother.

The Death Of Michael Jackson

The tragedy of Michael Jackson’s death at age 50, reportedly from cardiac arrest, pales in comparison to the tragedy of his life. This was a man who put himself under the knife for a multitude of plastic surgeries that deformed him. A man that grew more erratic during his climb to fame. He endured a 2005 trial for sexually abusing a child that, even though he was spared of any finding of wrongdoing, made him a "Wacko Jacko" to all but the most brainwashed of fans.

However, I think we all will remember him for the talent he was, the amazing career he had, the legend he had become in his lifetime. How amazingly gifted he was at a young age, even if that led to a solitary life of sadness, and what a massive, massive influence he was in music.

I think Michael Jackson is the one celebrity who seemed timeless to me. He's been a pop culture icon my entire life and I'm sad he's gone.
What a weird day it's been.

RIP: Michael Jackson

RIP: Farrah Fawcett

Farrah Fawcett, who starred in the television crime-fighting series Charlie's Angels and received critical acclaim for the movie The Burning Bed about domestic abuse, has died at age 62, according to her spokesman.
I grew up watching her as the quintessential poster girl of the '70s, a pulse-quickening new-age sex kitten with a trend-setting mane of blonde curls. My cousin Sabrina, Kelly and I(Jill) used to love playing Charlie Angels when we were all together.
Another sad day. Cancer sucks!!

Courtney Love Is Wasting Away

Another juicy tidbit of pop culture news was sent to me from Sheila. I love when people supply me with stuff I can post that is of interest to me and to others. It looks like Ms. Love has gone from a
curvaceous rock star to ghostly pale, frail and wasting away. I wonder what is going on with her.

Rachel Hunter Dumped

My gal pal Sheila sent me a link to this interesting bit of pop culture news . I could not help but feel her pain. I hope she can get over this......my suggestion is that she should hook up with one of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Song Of The Day: Canadian Girl By The Walkmen

The Walkmen are five New Yorkers who have played rock music since they were 10 years old. All five originally hail from Washington DC, United States where they attended St. Albans high school and played in several bands. Over the years, and in their many ensembles, they’ve experimented with punk, noise, and a lot of “garage” sounds. I like the vintage sound of this song.

LOST Meets Friends

Technically, we can't get our fix of full episodes of LOST on "YouTube," but the site still provides us with plenty of funny fan dedications, clip montages, and videos galore.
I love that there are a couple of sitcom aficionados out there with slick editing skills, who have decided to show us what Lost would look like if it were a sitcom from the nineties.

Song Of The Day: Suddenly I See By KT Tunstall

This rhythmic song is a tribute to "female power" inspired by and about musician/songwriter Patti Smith. Smith inspired Tunstall to a career in music as described in the lyrics through Tunstall looking at a picture of a woman's face, "the photograph of Patti Smith on the cover of Horses",and, admiring her strength and accomplishments, suddenly realizing what she wants to do with her life.

Don't Read This Post Or You Will Be Disappointed

I wish I hadn't read this.

Worlds Strangest People Part 2

More interesting videos to follow over the next few days.

This Week.......

Began a 2 week pet sitting for my parents while they are vacationing. My house now has 1 annoying parrot and 3 dogs running around as well as every child in the neighborhood wanting to come over and play with the 3lb. Yorkshire Terrier and talk to the parrot.

Worked 2 12 hour night shifts.

Went to the Dentist.

Went to Urgent Care as my ear infection worsened. Am now on oral antibiotics, ear drops that are antibiotics, eye drops that are antibiotics and other pills that are necessary for women when they are on that many antibiotics. I swear I have pills for every orifice of my body......can it get any better?

Numbed myself with Percocet........ahhhh!!

Watched Freedom Writers and thought it was fantastically heart wrenching and inspiring.

Watched My Best Friends Girl and thought it was cute. Dane Cook plays a great ass.

Went to Mount Sinai Hospital to return my hearing aids as I feel they have caused me more grief than benefit. I was able to see my ENT specialist while I was there and he looked in my ear and said" Yup, she's infected. No amount of antibiotics alone is going to fix that. Let me take the infection out for you and he hoovered out my ear with this vacuum like thing. The pain has drastically lessoned but my right ear is completely blocked for sound.

Had neighbours drop by for visits.

Attended another Meat Roll at the Legion with my workmates and friends.

Telephoned my father at his Hotel to tell him that I love him and to wish him a Happy Fathers Day.

Went shopping with Garth and the girls.

Ordered in Chinese to celebrate Fathers Day.

Song Of The Day: Thats What Dads Are For

Happy Fathers Day Dad. I hope you are enjoying your vacation. Garth, Brooke, Alley, Jedi, Jamie, Maggie, and Jo-Jo all miss you.

Sneakers...... And How They Got Their Name

We all know that Nike is named after the Greek goddess of victory, and the origin of “Air Jordan” is hardly obscure, but where did some other famous shoes and brands get their names? Here are the explanations for a few favorites. My daughter Brooke owns these featured "Chucks."

Happy Fathers Day

This is a sweet clip from "I LOVE LUCY". It is a little long, but very sweet and captures the joy of becoming parents and especially for the men......becoming a dad/daddy/father! Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

How do you explain this?

Song Of The Day: For What It's Worth By Placebo

Due to their penchant for androgynous attire/makeup and raw guitar riffs, Placebo have been described by some as a glam version of Nirvana. The multi-national band were influenced by the likes of Sonic Youth, the Pixies, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the aforementioned Nirvana.

Is Charlie Returning From The Dead?

Does this new ABC promo for the fall season imply that Dominic Monaghan’s Charlie is returning to LOST its final season?

Song Of The Day: Warwick Avenue By Duffy

The video for this killer song is almost entirely composed of a single shot; it starts with Duffy leaving Warwick Avenue Tube Station in the back of a black taxi, crying as she is singing the song. The video finishes with Duffy still in the car, wiping her tears, which had ruined her make-up. This was originally only supposed to be one scene from the video but the director felt the the 'black taxi scene' was so real he continued to film it as the whole music video.

Energize!

During the course of my day I always begin to feel sluggish around the 2 o' clock mark. It is during this time I reach for my fuel that recharges me..........coffee. I am thinking I need to reduce my coffee intake and begin to find alternative ways to refuel and revigorate.

1.) Have some chocolate.....We get an endorphin buzz from chocolate. It contains a bitter alkaloid called theobromine, a cousin of caffeine and, like caffeine, a stimulant. In spite of being so closely related, caffeine and theobromine have very different effects on human beings. Caffeine is a stronger stimulant and acts relatively quickly as a wake-up drug; theobromine tends to induce a mild sense of well-being over a longer period of time.

2.) Have an afternoon power snack such as yogurt, berries, granola ....... it will provide the boost of energy to carry me through the remainder of my day. Berries that are blue, red, or purple are great because their colour comes from anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant, that boosts energy.

3. ) Take some Vitamin C or sniff some citrus........Study after study shows the correlation between citric acid deficiency and chronic fatigue. Vitamin C also helps you absorb more nutrients from your food and citrus scents (like orange, lemon and lime) stimulate alertness. So lather on some of that lemon scented lotion.

4.)
Splash some water on your face.......It is simple and sure to give you a shot of energy.

5.) Take a walk outside........
Getting outside for some fresh air, a change of scenery, and a quick walk to get your blood going will do wonders for your mood and motivation.

6.) Roll up and down on your toes.......Roll up and down on your toes. This stimulates your circulatory system, which will deliver much-needed oxygen and fuel (glucose) throughout your body. You’ll be more energized and sharper.

7.) Brush your teeth........A great pick me up and with fresh breath you will feel energized.

Trailer: Shutter Island

I am so stoked for this film directed by Martin Scorcese. Shutter Island, opens in theaters on October 2nd. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the psychological thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson and Max von Sydow.
It is the story of two U.S. marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Ruffalo), who are summoned to a remote and barren island off the cost of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.

Song Of The Day: Second Chance By Shinedown

Lead singer Brent Smith has shared what this song is about..... "It's important for you to hear this... When I grew up, everyone was okay with being in a bubble. They were cool in their circle. That's fine. But no one should discourage someone if they have a dream, if they want something more [...] This song was difficult for me to write the lyrics to because it's about my mother and my father, and about the day I said goodbye to them, because I had to go try, and I'm still trying every day, to become a man. So, this song is about that. It's about the moment that you wake up and you decide you want to go for every single dream you ever want."

This Week I........

Worked five 12 Hour Nights.
Celebrated my 14th Wedding Anniversary very quietly this year as Hubby and I are planning on going to New York City in July as a gift to ourselves.
Enjoyed a great Teriyaki steak that was prepared by my husband.
Enjoyed a Hot Caramel Sundae in a waffle bowl from Dairy Queen.
Bought a storage unit and scored big in the savings as we got the floor model and saved over 50%.
Serenaded Uncle Jimmy as he celebrated his birthday with loved ones.
Bought my husband an early Fathers Day gift and began watching it. Wickedly good!
Watched Keith on DVD....Surprisingly good. This movie has lingered with me over the last few days.
Watched King Arthur on Blu-Ray. I love Clive Owen and would love to cast him as my choice for Jamie in the beloved Outlander Series if it ever gets translated to film.
Watched New In Town on DVD.....a tad painful to watch but I had to see it through to the end.
Birthday Celebrations with neighbourhood kids that we adore.

Song Of The Day: Heavy Cross By The Gossip

This video features a series of oddball events.... flashing lights, weird men, trannies, royalty, prosthetic limbs, skulls, flowers and dancers but I can't help but like this catchy tune.

Everyone Is Jumping On The Vampire Bandwagon

The television fall line up will include a pilot based on L.J. Smith's "Vampire Diaries" series of books.
"Vampire Diaries" comes from the same company whose past book series led to the series "Gossip Girl" and "Privileged."
Originally published in 1993, "Vampire Diaries" revolves around a young woman whose torn between two vampire brothers. The brothers.... one good, one evil .... are battling for her soul, and the souls of her pals, family and the small town where they live.

Weird Deaths

Greek philosopher Chrysippus is said to have died of laughter after watching his drunken donkey attempt to eat figs. (I am not sure why he found this funny in the first place.)

King Adolf Frederick of Sweden died of digestion problems after a meal of lobster, caviar, sauerkraut, smoked herring and champagne, topped off with 14 servings of his favorite dessert: semla served in a bowl of hot milk. He is remembered by Swedish schoolchildren as "the king who ate himself to death."

French president Félix Faure died of a stroke while receiving oral sex in his office.

Jack Daniel, founder of the Tennessee whiskey distillery, died of blood poisoning six years after receiving a toe injury when he kicked his safe in anger at being unable to remember its combination.

Jockey Frank Hayes, suffered a heart attack during a horse race. The horse, Sweet Kiss, continued running and finished first, making Hayes the only deceased jockey to win a race.

Baseball player Len Koenecke was bludgeoned to death with a fire extinguisher by the crew of an aircraft after provoking a fight with the pilot during flight.

Writer Sherwood Anderson swallowed a toothpick at a party and died of peritonitis.

Christine Chubbuck, an American television news reporter, committed suicide during a live broadcast on July 15. At 9:38 AM, 8 minutes into her talk show on WXLT-TV in Sarasota, Florida, she drew out a revolver and shot herself in the head.

Jon-Erik Hexum, an American television actor, died after he shot himself in the head with a prop gun during a break in filming on the set of the CBS series Cover Up, a program about a pair of fashion photographers/models who were actually secret agents. Hexum apparently did not realize that blanks use paper or plastic wadding to seal gun powder into the shell, and that this wadding is propelled out of the barrel of the gun with enough force to cause severe injury or death if the weapon is fired at point-blank range.

Garry Hoy, a Toronto lawyer, fell to his death from the 24th floor of the Toronto-Dominion Centre. Hoy had thrown himself at the window to prove the glass was "unbreakable."

Kenneth Pinyan of Seattle died of acute peritonitis (a lot of that going around) after engaging in anal sex with a stallion. Pinyan delayed his visit to the hospital for several hours out of fear of arrest. The case led to the criminalization of bestiality in Washington. His story was recounted in the 2007 documentary film Zoo.

Mariesa Weber, a 5'3" Florida woman, fell behind a 6' tall bookcase in her family's home and suffocated. She was not discovered for 11 days; her family thought she had been kidnapped.

Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old woman from Sacramento, California, died of water intoxication while trying to win a videogame system in a contest held by a local radio station. The contest, called "Hold Your Wee for a Wii," involved drinking large quantities of water without urinating. Strange placed second.
I have seen the effects of water intox first hand as excessive water drinking is not uncommon among chronic schizophrenic patients. The cause of this behavior is not known, though in a few cases, it may be partly a reaction to dry mouth from antipsychotic medication. More likely, there is something about schizophrenia itself that may lead to abnormalities in salt and water balance.

Song Of The Day: One Toke Over The Line By Brewer & Shipley

Following airplay of this single, President Richard Nixon labeled Brewer & Shipley public miscreants. In retaliation, they referred to Nixon by name in their song, "Oh Mommy,"
Oddly, the song was performed on The Lawrence Welk Show, a television program known for its conservative, family-oriented bent, by a duo known as "Gail and Dale." At the conclusion of the performance of the song, Welk remarked, without any hint of humor, "There you've heard a modern spiritual by Gail and Dale."

This led Michael Brewer to comment:
"The Vice President of the United States, Spiro Agnew, named us personally as a subversive to American youth, but at exactly the same time Lawrence Welk performed the crazy thing and introduced it as a gospel song. That shows how absurd it really is. Of course, we got more publicity than we could have paid for."

Advice To New Grads

Currently my hospital is recruiting new Registered Nurses to work within the facility. 3 girls that I have had the pleasure of working with are embarking on exciting times in their careers as they now will work within the scope and role of a Registered Nurse.
Here are some pearls of wisdom that my mentors passed onto me when I was the new gal on the block.

1.) The first thing that I learned was that I never was to accept abuse from a patient. Patients may be angry about how things are going in their life, but they must learn to vent their anger appropriately. That means no hitting, swearing, or throwing stuff at other people. Nurses are not punching bags. We have rights. Nurses must teach their patients to function in the real world, and we do them a disservice if we allow them to act out while in hospital settings.

2.) Do not be afraid that a patient will crumble if you say the wrong thing to them. I’ve never seen this happen during my nursing career. Just listen to your patients with your ears and with your heart. Everything else will fall into place.

3.) Never turn your back on a patient. This is self explanatory. Our patients are unpredictable.

4.) Don’t get offended if a patient hates you. That probably means that you are doing your job. Many patients come to the hospital because they have boundary issues, and issues involving the need for immediate gratification.

5.) Never forget that you are a REAL nurse. You aren’t caring for a wounded body, however you are caring for a wounded soul. Don’t sell yourself short.

Song Of The Day: Where Do The Children Play By Cat Stevens

The song reflects Islams' growing awareness of the turmoil of the 1960s and the issues involved..... war, urban sprawl, poverty, ecological disaster, and the future of humankind. The same themes and concerns are repeated later in many of Cat Stevens songs.

Took my daughters to the hairdresser to get cut and style.

Watched the Bachlorette with Canadian girl Jillian.

Watched more drama unfold on Jon & Kate plus 8.

Went to my local GP to get antibiotics and provide nasal speciman...sweet!

Started on eye antibiotics as my left eye has a nasty infection as well.......yum.....don't I sound appealing?

Watched Gran Torino..........This film was compelling and, mixed with the drama was a refined touch of humour. Has become one of my top 5 films.

Watched The International........even with Clive, it was just alright. Did I tell you how much I loved Gran Torino?

Watched my kitchen fill with bubbles galore after my husband used liquid soap detergent in the dishwasher......ha,ha,ha.

Slept! Slept! Slept!

Went the whole week without going to the gym......ugh!!

Went for a nighttime drive to the beach.

Visited with friends and neighbors who are facing a challenging time right now........ "The moment of change is now."
