CNE : GoodNight, GoodNight

CNE : SuperDogs, Karoke, Art Attack

The SuperDog Show never fails to thrill me or the kids. We had a blast. We wandered into to "Days of Past at the CNE" and I was able to get a photo of the girls on an original Flyer car. I remember those days. I also enjoyed when Brianna asked me if I use to wear clothes like that in the olden days( gold gown photo.) I told her I didn't live during the olden days to which she replied, " Well, like the 80's?" Wowza!!! I certainly wore some strange things in the 80's but nothing quite like that. This was Alleys first year of singing Karoke in front of strangers and she made her debut singing "Come Clean" by Hilary Duff. She rocked the house!!!

CNE : Midway

By going with the all day passes on the midway we were able to navigate around the sudden rainstorm we got. When I saw the weather clouds open up and pour down upon us despite a weather forecast that only showed sunshine I knew that this was a sign that my Brookie should have been with us at the CNE.

CNE : The Arrival, Mom Needs A Caffeniated Bevarge, The Rodeo Show

Yesterday we made our Annual Trip to the CNE. My Brookie has not been feeling well and she stayed at home with Daddy. Due to have alternate dates to go, I took Alley and their friend Brianna. We made it through the gates at 10:30. I was hoping we would run into my Aunt Janet and Uncle Tom who have been known to perform at the CNE before with their 4B Ranch Wild West Rodeo Show. Unfortunately there was another group of trick riders from Texas and it just wasn't the same. They were missed this year by everyone that I chatted to in the Pavillion. I also learned that trick riding and roping is not a skill that is appreciated by the 10 year old sitting behind me......"Grandma do we have to stay here and watch this. Its boring. I like watching stunts when people actually get hurt."

Movies : Part 8

Movies that Make me Laugh

Austin Powers 1 & 2 - Shagadelic Fun
Old School - Pure Silliness
Waking Ned Divine - Bit O' Irish Fun
The Commitments - Fun with great soundtrack
Fast times At Ridgemont High - It's Awesome! Totally Awesome!
Elf - Funny Holiday Flick
Swingers - Sex and the city ......guys version
Bachlor Party - I used to watch this with my brothers when I was younger......I wonder if I would still find it funny?

This was a hard one for me as I am generally not a fan of comedies and find the most obscure things humourous, so after some additonal thought these might be some other viewing pleasures that give me a chuckle.

Analyze This, Vacation, City Slickers, Uncle Buck, Grumpy Old men and of course.......Our wedding Video :)

Movie Review : Running Scared

I write this review with a bit of a bias........my favorite genre of movies are action flicks and I am a HUGE fan of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
If you are of the same then this movie will appeal to you. The movie starts with a bang, a couple of them to be exact, as a brutal shootout happens in the confines of a hotel room.....and I am hooked. It is the gritty story of Joey Gazelle (Paul Walker), a mobster who loses the murder weapon he was supposed to destroy. Gazelle knows he's dead if he can't find the hot gun before the police or his organized-crime cronies, but his trail to redemption is confusing and brutal.
One of my favorite touches is actually the animated art during the end credits

The End Of Summer......

The CNE always signals the end of summer for me. It has become tradition for the last 6 years for me to take my girls to the ex. Garth is not a fan like me and prefers to stay home and enjoy the day to himself. I have fond memories of the ex and was a annual visitor through all my teen years. As I step through the admission gates, I am always taken back by the memories......The Himalaya, Tiny Tom Donuts, Seeing my Aunt and Uncle and cousins performing with their horses, concerts at the Grandstand, seeing the airshow, playing the Birthday Game, The Haunted House and the chicken exit, 99 cents spaghetti, Free Double Bubble Samples.
I will be heading to the ex tomorrow with my girls and I love that we are forming new memories...... the Super Dog Show, the Human Cannonball, watching the Mardi Gras Parade and seeing if we can get more beads than the previous year. We always spend time in the horse pavillion watching the owners groom their majestic beasts. We spend a bulk of our day in Kidsworld with a petting zoo, playground, midway rides, clowns and puppet shows. I can't wait!!

Movies : Part 7

Movies That Totally Creep Me Out:

Silence of the Lambs - Proves that extreme gore is not necessary for bone-chilling creepiness.

Manhunter - A good psycholgical character study about the effects of police investigating serial killers.

The Shinning
- "Hereeeeeeees Johnny"

Psycho
- This movie made me afraid to shower alone.

What Lies Beneath
- This movie made afraid to bathe alone (Ha,ha,ha)

Primal Fear - "Sooner or later a man who wears two faces forgets which one is real."

Mothman Prophecies
- An intriguing movie that makes you think. I became very interested in the prohecies of the mothman and spent time reading about alleged sightings.

Blair Witch Project - What could be scarier than your own imagination?

High Tension - Intense gore!

The Ring - Spoooooooooooooky.

The 6th Sense - One of the best Shyamalan movies.

Seven - Left me unsettled for days.

Saw - Killer ending

What I Learned Today.........

Garth went out today for his usual weekend search of vinyl. Today was a successful day for him and his buddy. Garth and I have been establishing a ritual on these days. We will go downstairs to our media room and spin the black circle. Garth will sit and lovingly clean up his collection and I will peruse the cover art. Today while reading the back cover, Shel Silverstein was listed as the writer of all their songs on this album. Interestingly enough, Shel Silverstein is well known in our house as he is Garths favorite poet and he has shared his love of him with our daughters. I used to listen to this album from my fathers collection when I was a young girl. As I listened today while making the connection it was like I heard them differently.

Movies : Part 6

Oldies but Goodies:

Cool Hand Luke - "What we've got here is failure to communicate."

Sabrina
- Underneath the love story, there is a message about class distinction, but it isn't too heavy handed to ruin the movie.

Brubaker - Based on a true story and tells of the events of one man's attempts to reform a prison system mired in corruption and brutality.

Papillon - Based on the true story of Henri Charriere, also known as Papillon. A petty criminal, Papillon is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a French penal colony in French Guiana, South America. Papillon is determined to escape but attempt after attempt meets with difficulty, resulting in eventual recapture. He continues his attempts to escape despite incarcerations in solitary confinement as punishment.

Great Escape - A three-hour long epic based on a true story about the most notorious group of escape artists held as POWs in WWII.

Vertigo
- Thrilling and mysterious.

The Graduate
- It is full of clever one liners, as well as plenty of though provoking dialogue. It is one of the first movies to ever have a real soundtrack. It was done almost exclusively by Simon & Garfunkel with songs like "The Sounds of Silence", "Scarbourough Fair", and "Mrs. Robinson."

The Birds - A Hitchcock Masterpiece.

Cape Fear
- A Suspensful Thriller.

Rear Window - Another Hitchcock Gem.

Movie Review : The Matador

Last evening as I was on the downslide of a 3 day(12 hour) stretch at work, I call my hubby to ask him if he wants to rent us a flick to see when I get home. 1/2 hour later he calls and says he bought two movies from blockbuster and we can watch either one.....my choice. He tells me he bought "Running Scared" and "The Matador." Interestingly, I have heard of neither. I ask around at work and the feedback I get is that " The Matador sucks"; "Don't waste your time"; "It had a few good spots and then it went nowhere." Everyone suggested I stick with the "hot" Paul Walker, in the action flick,"Running Scared." I could tell Garth was really keen on "The Matador" so I threw caution to the wind and decided that would be my choice. Brosnan was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Julian Noble the alcoholic, foul-mouthed assassin. Greg Kinnear also stars as a sweet, lovable, harried businessman. While watching I couldn't help but feel there was a Tarantino-esque vibe to the film. What emerges is a dark comedy about a very unusual friendship. I really enjoyed this film and feel what makes it so enjoyable is how well Pierce Brosnan, makes his hitman character so interesting and convincing. I’ve never seen him in something where his character was so colorful. He really is off the wall, but Bronson makes him real at the same time.

NASA Can't Find Original Tape Of Moon Landing

I tend to belong to the camp that believes this very significant event never took place and if it did doesn't the American Government have some sort of national librarian who is responsible for the organization of such historic files?

When Weather Does Not Cooperate With Plans

This evening Garth and I had planned on taking the kids to the drive-in in Port Hope. Our neighbors thought this sounded like a great idea and were going to pack up their gang and join us. My children have never been to a drive in and were so excited. Garth and I have been keeping a watchful eye on the weather and have decided to cancel our plans and reschedule for another time. Brooke is so disappointed and will not accept lightly that mother nature is throwing a glitch in her plans. She has been sitting at the computer googling " Weather+Port Hope." and giving us play by plays every few minutes. I wonder how long it will take her to admit defeat?

Movies : Part 3

Movies I Watched As I Entered Early Adulthood:

These will reflect that I am a product of the eighties and are inclusive of movies I saw during the dating years....either with a group or solo. Of course all the movies could overlap into more than one category but as I reflect over the next few days I am choosing to put it in the category that best suited my experience of the movie.

Stand by me - A story of true friendship and the loss of innocence.

Adventures In Babysitting - Unfortunately, Disney is fond of the original as well, Adventures in Babysitting is being remade.

Pretty In Pink - I loved the soundtrack of this movie.

Poltergeist
- Scared me senseless.

Platoon
- The first Vietnam Movie I ever saw.

Summer School
- A fun movie about friendship.

Teen Wolf
- I saw this movie at the Brantford Theatre with a guy named Steve Martin. The movie and him can both be described as corny but endearing.

Lethal Weapon
- This was the Mel I loved.

Cape Fear
- I saw this movie with my brother and Jim at a theatre in Hamilton. Deniro at his best. "Come out, come out, where ever ya' are."

Die Hard- My favorite action film of all time.

Naked Gun Movies
- Slapstick comedy at its best. My husband and younger brother Scott, quote lines from this movie every chance they get.

When Harry Met Sally
- I still love this romantic comedy to this day.

Batman
- The beginning of my admiration for director Tim Burton.

Field Of Dreams
- "Is there a heaven?" ... "Oh yeah. It's the place where dreams come true."

Movies : Part 2

Movies I Grew Up On:

Tommy
- I was living in Maracaibo, Venezuela at the time and there were other Canadian families working there that my family hung out with. One of the families had a daughter my age and when we went to their apartment they had this movie on Beta. For some bizarre reason we loved this musical film and watched it too many times to count. Tommy is the ultimate rock musical that is full of Hollywood stars, rock stars, craziness and awesome music.

E.T. - I saw this movie the summer I turned 16. I had just gotten my beginners driving licence and to celebrate I went to the Regent Theatre in Oshawa with my friends to celebrate. I remember there being a long line up for admission and a fully packed theatre. While my husband and I were dating he showed me a T-shirt he wore the summer E.T. came out. It was one of the iron on decal types and the t-shirt was small enough to fit my 9 year old daughter now. I asked how old were you when you saw E.T? He was 11......Yikes!! I could have been his babysitter.

Gremlins - Who didn't think Gizmo was cute?

Halloween
- I remember watching this film during the early 80's with my girlfriends downstairs in the basement and my older brother and his friends snuck around outside and scared the crap out of us through the back door.

Supermanan I,II & III - My cousins were extras in Superman II during the scene where he flies over Niagara Falls.

Back To The Future Trilogy, Footloose, Ghost busters, Ferris Buellers Day Off, The Karate Kid, Nightmare On Elm Street, The Breakfast Club, The Outsiders.

Movies : Part 1

I love movies. I love everything about movies. I love seeing them in a theater. I love renting them and watching them in my own home. I love award shows. I love it all. Movies make stories come to life. They often make us take a look at ourselves and our world. They can help us see ourselves in new and different ways. Movies can take us a little deeper inside ourselves. I will be remembering the movies I have watched over the next few days and dividing them into into categories.

My Most Memorable Movie Going Experiences : I have 2 that come very quickly to mind.

1.)When I was 10-11 years of age I was living in Fort McMurray Alberta. It was a very small community with not a lot of entertainment venues for a young girl. Every weekend my mother and father would drop me and my younger brother off at the small movie theatre in town to catch a matinee while they ran their errands. Those movies were magical to me during those years. Movies, when you used to see them on the big screen, had a mystery that they no longer have. For one thing, they were irretrievable and unlike today, films were not easy to see again.

Those years as as a young girl I would let the movie take me away to different worlds. Movies I remember......Benji, Where the red fern grows, The Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, Herbie goes to Monte Carlo, The Shaggy DA, Pippi Longstocking, The Bad News Bears.
2.)The summer that I was 12, I went on my most memorable summer vacation with my parents and two of my brothers. We drove through the Western Provinces and down the Pacific Coast to Calinfornia. I remember seeing the movie "Grease." It was different than anything I had ever seen before, from the cartoon opening to the cheesy end. Everytime I see it now I ride the wave of nostalgia
