Hurricane Ike devastation in Texas

Hurricane Ike wreaked a great deal of havov that affected several countries including Cuba, Haiti, and the United States. Ike is blamed for approximately 114 deaths (74 in Haiti alone), and damages that are still being tallied, with estimates topping $10 billion. Many shoreline communities of Galveston, Texas were wiped from the map by the winds. These photos reveal some of the hardship and fury.

Song Of The Day: Brandy By Looking Glass

I have always loved this song and have fond memories of singing along with my parents during the 70's. When it comes on the radio I still reach for the volume and crank this tune out as I sing along.

A year ago I posted pictures of Mena Suvari and her shaved head. I just saw these recent pictures of her and thought “wow her hair grew out fast.” It has also been a year since my hair completely fell out and I have come to relize it does grow faster than you think.

Song Of The Day: Black Betty By Ram Jam

The origin and meaning of the lyrics of this sing are debateable
Some claim the term Black Betty was a reference for a prostitute, a prison bullwhip, or the paddywagon.

George Takei Marries Longtime Partner

Congrats to newlywed George Takei, who has married his partner of 21 years.

Beckham And Lopez Looking Good

Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham both look fabulous in this recent photo. Intimidating and bitchy as hell, but hot. I like Posh’s short hair and think she wears it almost as well as Halle Berry. Jennifer Lopez is back in shape very quickly after giving bithe to twins.

RIP: Richard Wright

Richard Wright, the founding member of Pink Floyd whose piano and synthesizer work played a critical part in the pioneering British psychedelic rock band's ethereal sound, died Monday after a short battle with cancer, his spokesman said. He was 65.
This past Christmas I watched him perform with Gilmour during David Gilmour's
solo concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2006. I remember my husband commenting on how thin and frail he looked then. Only two members of the original Floyd left, another generation of rock is passing. Truly sad!

Video Of American Pie By Don McLean

This video is a brilliant interpretation of the story behind the song American Pie by Don McLean. Featuring the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and of course Buddy, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens.

Song Of The Day: 100 Years By Five For Fighting

The song is about a man who is 99 and about to turn 100, who looks back at his life to see whether he really "lived" it or not. The song's main theme is to never take life for granted, and all of the time we have on Earth is right now, so we should make the most of it.

A Big Revelation On 90210

The father of Kelly’s 4-year-old son Sammy will finally be revealed on this Tuesday’s episode of 90210. Brenda (Shannen Doherty) and Kelly (Jennie Garth) will be having a serious conversation about Sammy’s dad when Brenda reveals his name.

Song Of The Day: Thank You By Dido

In the music video for this song, Dido has not paid her bills, and the government comes to tear down her house. The construction workers put an eviction notice on her door and move her things out. Dido, who is partly oblivious to the fact that her house has been barricaded, is simply singing the song. In the end, she is escorted out of her home and is forced to walk the streets with a backpack and suitcases in town.
The end of the video implies that her house is being torn down because it was built before the big city district was built (her home is sandwiched between two large skyscrapers).

Dido actually wrote this song herself as a tribute to her boyfriend Bob; they got engaged in 2001 but this engagement did not last long and they broke apart the following year

Roger Ebert Attacked At Toronto Film Festival

According to the New York Daily News, Roger Ebert was attacked during a screening of Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire on Saturday at the Toronto Film Festival by New York Post critic Lou Lumenick.
What kind of person would just start yelling and swinging because somebody tapped them? Why wouldn’t that person turn around and see what the other person wanted? Did he think it was some crazed movie reviewer fan that was stalking him?

Song Of The Day: The Load By Jackson Brown

I always referred to this song as "The Roadie Song" It has been one of my favorites and is pure sweetness and always makes me feel nostalgic.

Fun Viral Website

This site promotes the new Shia LaBeouf movie, Eagle Eye which arrives in theatres Sept. 26. It takes users through an interactive process that involves phone calls and voice recognition. The thriller involves lots of cell-phone usage therefore the site's concept makes some sense. I played it last night and sure enough after entering my phone number the phone rang. Fun and freaky.

Just In Time For Halloween

Halloween specials have not caught on quite as strongly as the Christmas special over the past few decades, but I remember looking forward to this annually. I identified with Lucy who is bossy and sometimes grouchy as she shows a soft side when she wakes up in the middle of the night, goes to check on Linus and finds his bed empty, then gets dressed and goes to get him freezing in the pumpkin patch and puts him to bed without a word.

This special edition is a new release this week and comes with fun features like the bonus special "It's Magic, Charlie Brown" a new featurette and a digital music download.

Song Of The Day:Watching The Wheels By John Lennon

This is a great song that I can relate to. People..... myself included, are always in a rush to do things to get somewhere in their lives, and they become so worked up and discontented, that they forget to actually live and dream.

Camp Lisa

Lisa Loeb has a new CD of children's music which features a collaboration with Steve Martin.
My daugher Brooke developed a friendship over the summer that I have watched deepen. As she enters grade 6 and is on the brink of adolescence the song "best friend" that is streaming here reminds me of her and her new galpal.

My Thoughts On '90210'

Last night Kelly, Brenda and a lot of pretty young people came together for the new 90210.

When Brenda walked into the Peach Pit........ the years sort of melted away for me.

I want to know if Dylan or Brandon is Sammy's father. I'm hoping Brandon.

So far......I am hearing the reviews are not pretty.

I watched the two-hour pilot and for the most part found it okay. Yes, corny, cheesy, lame but so was the original.
The critics complained about everything from the ages of the actors to the plots. Seems they're doing the same thing all over again. This time however, they're pretending the original was a much loved classic. The critics hated the fact the original lasted as long as it did and would be oh so happy to see this fail too.

While I enjoyed cast member Jessica Walter who at times stole the show.......I do ponder who exactly is 90210s target audience? At times, it felt like it was aiming for the High School Musical crowd with the cheesy dialogue, clean-cut faces and, obviously, high school musical. Then it attempted to veer into edgier territory with some sexual references, but the content was never quite sophisticated enough for adult or teen viewers accustomed to Gossip Girl and The Hills.
Will I watch again? "Yes!!! It was mindless fun.

Song Of The Day: Against Me! By Stop!

This song rocks!!

First Maple Leaf Foods......Now Wild Mushrooms

Food is a dangerous thing.

I know this first hand as I just recently was diagnosed with Pancreatits related to gall stones.

Last week I ate a beautiful but rich and fattening dish of pasta with a white cream sauce. It included sausage, onion and grated romano and parmesan cheese.........yummmmmm!!

Within 30 minutes I was in terrible pain in my back. I endured it for 4 hours before I presented myself to Emerg at the local hospital. The doctor on duty ordered bloodwork and the findings revealed that my serum lipase which should be under 250 was at 3000. My pancreas was inflamed and under attack.

I was admitted overnight and upon discharge was given instuctions to eat cautiously and return to the hospital if pain returns. I also went for an abdominal ultrasound and yesterday gallstones were confirmed. I am booked for surgery tomorrow afternoon.

Windex Can Wait

"This house is clean enough to be healthy, and dirty enough to be happy."

This saying really sums up my attitude on housework. Throughout the summer our house has been in a state of complete disarray as we have been busy enjoying the summer.

Playdates with friends, barbecues and get togethers, movie nights, days at the beach, hikes...these activities take alot out of us...ALL of us. In order for my house to be in tip top shape, with all the laundry folded and put away, etc, etc...... I would have to either hire cleaning staff, or sit my daughters in front of the TV or computer all day while I attempt to make my house look like a page out of "Canadian House & Home."

Housework has never been my specialty and after 13 years of marriage and 11 years of motherhood, my domestic skills have improved somewhat, but I'm still no June Cleaver.

As long as my house is clean enough to be healthy, I can deal with the sand from the beach, the hair from the dog and the toys left here and there throughout the house. These are all reminders that my daughters have had a summer filled with great memories...the Windex can wait.

Song Of The Day: Myriah By Shwa

I really like the sound of this singer from New York. His song Myriah is a a wistful song about a love that never was. Give chop chop a listen to as well. These songs speak to me.
