Things You Did Not Know About LoveBoat

I grew up watching TLB, and yes, it was cheesy, but cheese that had sentimental value to me.

1) Dick Van Patten ("Eight Is Enough") was the first ship's doctor. He played the role in the first TLB that ever aired, a two-hour movie in 1976.

2) It almost wasn’t made. Aaron Spelling had two shows in the works at ABC -- The Love Boat and "The San Pedro Beach Bums" -- and many execs were higher on the latter. But then-ABC Entertainment President Fred Silverman pushed and got TLB greenlit, and it lasted nine seasons. San Pedro Beach Bums was killed after half a season.

3) It made Charo a star. The guest most associated with the show (she was on eight times), Charo was cast after Spelling saw her act in Las Vegas. Charo: ''Never in history [did] a producer give so many chances to so many people, and one of those people was me. 'Cuchi-cuchi' showed me the way to the bank. That bulls--- make me rich."

4) They could get almost anyone they wanted. More than 1,000 guest stars boarded The Love Boat, from future A-listers (Tom Hanks, Billy Crystal) to film legends (Ginger Rogers, Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) to athletes and artists (Reggie Jackson, Andy Warhol). The day after Vanessa Williams won the Miss America pageant, TLB had her booked to play Isaac’s love interest.

5) Gavin McLeod (Captain Stubing) is now 79 and is a spokesman/ambassador for Princess Cruises, and honorary mayor of Pacific Palisades, Calif.

6) Fred Grandy (Gopher) is now 61 and is a former four-term congressman from Iowa and ex-CEO of Goodwill Industries who cohosts the news/talk-radio program The Grandy & Andy Morning Show on WMAL in Washington, D.C.

7) Cynthia Lauren Tewes (Julie the Cruise Directer) is now 55. After graduating from culinary school and becoming a cheese specialist, Tewes has returned to acting.

8) Ted Lange is now 59 (isaac the bartender) He is a director and playwright.

9) Bernie Kopel is now 76. (Gopher) He had shot a cameo for the film version of Get Smart, reprising his role as Siegfried. He performs in regional theater.

Deal Of The Day: Coffee Time

McDonald’s Canada is handing out free small coffee starting 28 February until 6 March 2011. No purchase required.
I actually prefer the cups of McDonald’s coffee to Tim Hortons. If you don’t want to Roll Up the Rim to Win at Tim’s (starting 21 Feb), head over to McD’s for your free cup.
The drive through is going to be especially busy those mornings.

Rules Of Life

I truly believe there are rules that usually go unspoken but everyone should folllow and some of these are.......

Stay to the right.

Floss and take care of your teeth. Tooth pain is terrible and unattractive teeth lead people to believe you are uneducated. That's just how it is.

Let the people exiting the elevator off before rushing to get into it.

If you don't know what to say, silence is always an option.
I learned this from my friend Sheila, who used this approach to deal with rude and antagonistic people. If someone says something you don't like (and don't know how to respond to) just stare at them and don't say anything. Totally.... terrifying. And totally effective.

No talking during movies or using cell phones.

Don't buy the extended warrenty.

Don't steal other people's food in the work fridge.

Learn to pick your battles. Ask yourself, "Will this matter one year from now? How about one month? One week? One day?"

While driving if your trying to get over and someone nicely lets you into their lane, give a courtesy thank you wave.

Make an extra copy of important stuff like your keys, your lease, your birth certificate, your social security card. Then give said copy to someone trust worthy.

While walking in crowded areas, do not stop right in the middle of foot traffic to look at a map, answer the phone, etc. Just step off to the side, out of the direct path of traffic to handle your business.

Give lots of hugs to everyone you care for.

If you have 20 items in your cart and you've stepped up to the 15 or 10 items-or-less line expect people to stare at you like they will kill you.

Uncomfortable underwear can ruin your day. Don't wear your sexy-times underwear on the day you have to walk ten blocks to work.

If you run into a friend at the supermarket and want to have a chat, go talk to each other somewhere out of the way of those who are trying to do their shopping.

If you don't know, ask. Because that thing that people say about assuming (it makes an ass out of you and me)That's true.

It's easier if you clean as you go.

Cover your mouth when you cough and yawn.

Offer assistance and your seat to elderly and pregnant people.

and my personal favorite......
Get your own newspaper/magazines. It's not polite to look over the shoulder to read whatever I'm reading, especially if I feel you breathing down on me.

Jewel Is Pregnant

Apparently she is writing an album for her unborn son. Jewel and her husband pro rodeo cowboy Ty Murray, 41, who have been married since August 2008 after spending 10years together are expecting their first child at the end of the year.

She says, “I’ve actually been writing songs for him. I wrote an album called Lullaby when I was trying to get pregnant, and now that I am pregnant, I’m writing a children’s record so it’s really been fun to write things that your children will wanna hear, and thinking what will be a fun story.”

My Favorite TV Shows Of The Moment

I want to finish up watching Dexter but I forget which season I left on.
I need to finish up on Rescue Me but am unsure what season I am on.

Can't wait for The Walking Dead to resume.

I need to catch up on Greys Anatomy....I think I left off with Season 4.

I am thinking maybe I should have stuck with Off The Map but I may catch later.

I enjoy NCIS & NCIS: Los Angeles but it does not pain me to miss them.

I love Criminal Minds and might check out the new ones although I am not a big fan of Forest Whittiker.

The series Blue Blood has amazing dynamics between the characters and I have developed a crush on Tom Selleck and his infamous moustache.

I love True Blood and need to get caught up as I have only watched the first two seasons.

Harrys Law is brilliant.

Survivor and Big Brother also fill my PVR.

I want to check out Nurse Jackie and Shameless

Top Deaths Ever

The brutal stabbing death of OJ Simpson’s ex-wife—along with her friend Ron Goldman (who apparently was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time) resulted in one of the most bizarre and racially charged trials of the century.

The wife of Polish director Roman Polanski became the unfortunate subject of one of the most famous and gruesome murders in modern history—rivaling even that of Jack the Ripper. Accosted in her Los Angeles home on the evening of August 8, 1969 by members of the Charles Manson gang, she, along with four other people in the house, were strangled and/or bludgeoned and stabbed numerous times. Eight months pregnant at the time, the news of her death shocked the nation and turned the trial of Manson and his followers into one of the first media circuses. Manson remains in prison for his role in the killings (he didn’t directly participate in the murders but was able to induce his brain-addled followers to do the dirty work). He maintains his claim of innocence to this day, as well as remaining convinced that he may very well be the messiah.

The sultry 36-year old blond bombshell was found dead in the bedroom of her Brentwood, California home in August of 1962. Her death was originally considered a prescription barbiturate induced suicide, though later some suggested she was murdered.

When up-and-coming singer and pioneer rock-and-roller Buddy Holly died in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa on February 2, 1959 it abruptly ended the career of someone who could arguably have become the most important voice in Rock and Roll. Holly, who was touring with a group that included Dion and the Belmonts, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “Big Bopper” Richardson (the latter two of whom also died in the crash), had rented the charter at the last minute rather than spend another miserable night in their perennially broken down, unheated bus. Unfortunately, as soon as they got airborne their equally young pilot decided the near white-out conditions were not conducive to flying and tried to turn back, only to fly the plane right into the ground, killing all of them instantly. In a note of irony, future Country Western star Waylon Jennings, who had been playing bass guitar for Holly during the tour, lost a coin-toss with Valens for the fourth seat on the plane. It was to be something that would haunt him the rest of his life.

John Lennon’s death at the hands of obsessed fan Mark David Chapman in New York City combined with the attempted shooting of President Reagan and Pope John Paul II a few months later, would lead to a major crackdown of the sale of handguns. Chapman, by the way, never really had a good rationale for why he shot his favorite celebrity and has been cooling his heels in Attica’s famous prison in upstate New York ever since. Eligible for parole since 2000, he has been turned down every year.

The King of Pop was likewise discovered dead in his home in Los Angeles. Initial reports claimed Jackson died of a heart attack, but it was later determined that he probably died from a cocktail of prescription drugs, again taken in massive doses.

The King of Rock and Roll was found dead in his bathroom at Graceland at the age of 42. Originally listed as “cardiac arrhythmia” (basically his heart stopped), it later turned out that Mrs. Presley’s boy had ingested a whole cocktail of prescription drugs—from Morphine and Demerol to Placidyl and Valium—taken in doses no competent doctor would prescribe. Oh, and he also had codeine, quaaludes and a bunch of other drugs in his system which, when combined with the eating habits and diet of an eight-year-old, makes one wonder how he made it to 42.

Little Darth Vader Warms My Heart

Never have I met a bigger Star Wars Fan than my hubby. He still owns all his StarWars toys and most are in the original packaging. He still has his original bedding and his comforter from when he was a wee little boy is my favorite blanket to snuggle with down in the Movie Room. When the last 3 or (first 3 movies) were released he made me stand in line hours in advance with other StarWars junkies and himself. He has pulled the girls from school for each primiere night as we had to arrive early to ensure the best seats in the sweet spot. I remember seeing Tears in his eyes during the familar opening score during The Phantom Menace in 1999. I swear this little boy could have been my Garth.

The Candy Man

I used to love this song.

When Sammy was married to May Britt interracial marriages were still illegal in 31 states. Sammy was left off the invite of the inaugural ball, hosted by Frank Sinatra because of this. Sammy was later invited to sleep over at the White House by President Nixon and is believed to be the first African American to be invited to do so.
The Rat Pack was originally known as the Clan but changed because Sammy objected because it was too similar to the Ku Klux Klan.

Facts That People Get Wrong

Model T Fords initially came out in a variety of colors.....not just black. However, between 1914 and 1925 you could only buy one in black.

Continuing on with our color theme, even though most black bears are black, they also come in white, brown, cinnamon and blue, depending on where in the world they are found.

Black boxes in planes are not black ....they are orange. This is to help investigators locate it by sight if necessary after a crash. The name was chosen entirely for humor reasons.

Pirates didn’t walk the plank nor did they make people walk the plank. Walking the plank is a myth. When a pirate wanted to dispose of someone they did the most obvious and simple thing.....they tossed them overboard

Covered bridges were usually built not to protect people traveling on them, but to protect the bridges themselves. This is because early bridges were usually made from wood and needed to be protected from the elements. Keeping the rain off people crossing is just a bonus.

US ship captains may not perform weddings on board unless they are a priest, rabbi, minister, etc. There are even some regulations specifically prohibiting this even for those who are competent to perform the ceremony.
